Why Bet on Chicago?

The White Sox went 4-3 vs. the Blue Jays in 2021, winning two of three at home and splitting four at Rogers Centre. The final five games were decided by three runs or less. The Sox and Blue Jays have alternated wins and losses over the last 10 contests since 5/17/19.

Keep in mind that unvaccinated players can’t play in Toronto. The Sox will be without setup man Kendall Graveman and starting pitcher Dylan Cease because neither is. Kyle Crick was called up from Triple-A Charlotte to take Graveman’s spot. Crick has allowed four runs with a 5/7 K/BB ratio over six innings this season with the big club.

The Sox lost star shortstop Tim Anderson to a groin injury on Sunday and he’s headed to the injured list. Anderson, 29, fell to the ground after throwing catcher P.J. Higgins out at first base in the top of the fifth inning vs. the Cubs. He limped off the field with the help of the White Sox training staff. Danny Mendick went 2-for-4 with two runs scored Sunday against the Cubs. Mendick entered the game at shortstop and served as the White Sox’s leadoff hitter once Anderson was forced from the game.

Anderson is hitting .356 as an offensive catalyst for the second-place Sox, who are in the midst of another injury-riddled season. The team is without stars Luis Robert (COVID-19), Eloy Jimenez (hamstring), Yoan Moncada (hip) and starting pitcher Lance Lynn (knee). In addition, Jimenez had to leave his first rehab game in the minors Saturday. It’s possible that Robert can return Tuesday.

The White Sox are 122-89 since 2020 when Anderson is in the lineup, compared to 28-28 when he does not play. During that span, the Sox are 103-58 when Anderson records a hit, 61-25 when he records a multihit effort, 26-7 when he registers a three-hit game and 26-3 when he hits a home run. Anderson needs four home runs and two steals to become the fourth player in White Sox history to record 100 HR/100 SB, joining Minnie Miñoso, Alexei Ramírez and Ray Durham.

Jose Abreu reached 808 RBIs on a RBI single in the 10th inning Sunday, tying him with 2022 Hall-of-Fame inductee Miñoso for fifth place in White Sox history.

It’s right-hander Lucas Giolito (3-1) on the mound. Giolito picked up his third victory of the season last Wednesday, limiting the Red Sox to one run on five hits over his six innings of work. Giolito racked up seven strikeouts while issuing four walks on the evening. The only damage done against him came on an RBI single by Alex Verdugo in the opening inning. Giolito generated 17 swings and misses in the ballgame — nine of those on his slider — while a CSW of 32 percent. He has a 2.63 ERA and 1.27 WHIP.

Giolito has gone 2-0 with a 3.22 ERA (8 ER/22.1 IP), 21 strikeouts and a .241 (21-87) opponents’ average in four career starts against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Jays are on a season-high five-game winning streak following an 11-10 victory at the Angels on Sunday. Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (wrist) walked Sunday as a pinch-hitter. Guerrero Jr. was held out of the Blue Jays’ starting lineup due to left wrist soreness but came off the bench to be intentionally walked in the eighth inning. The 23-year-old is hitting .256/.351/.451 with nine homers and 24 RBI across 191 plate appearances this season. He seems likely to return to Toronto’s starting lineup for Tuesday’s series opener.

Teoscar Hernández (hip) drew a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk and also singled Sunday in the Blue Jays’ victory. Hernández was held out of the Blue Jays’ starting lineup Sunday afternoon due to a relatively minor hip issue, but came off the bench to draw a game-tying bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning. He also singled in the ninth inning as well. Bo Bichette went 2-for-6 with a solo home run in Sunday’s win. Down by a run in the top of the eighth, Bichette hit a game-tying 405-foot solo home run off of Ryan Tepera. The shortstop has four multi-hit performances over his last five games.

Lourdes Gurriel went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, five RBI and two walks Sunday. Gurriel accounted for nearly half of the Blue Jays’ run production. It was just the third time he’s had multiple RBI in a game all season. The 29-year-old has logged a .238/.299/.351 slash line with two home runs, 18 RBI, 14 runs scored and a pair of stolen bases through 167 plate appearances.

The Blue Jays have won an MLB-high 14 one-run games this season (14-7). Their 15 one-run victories last year were the 3rd fewest among Major League clubs (15-15). Toronto has played in 21 games decided by a single run this year, most in the majors.

It’s right-hander Kevin Gausman (4-3) on the mound. Gausman held the Cardinals scoreless across six innings of work last Tuesday as the Blue Jays won 8-1. Gausman had the splitter working again in this one, garnering 13 of his season-high 23 swinging strikes among 105 pitches. He issued back-to-back walks in the first inning, which was certainly unexpected for someone who had walked just three all season coming into this start. Those were Gausman’s only two free passes of the night, though, and he punched out eight. He now boasts a 65/5 K/BB ratio over 56 frames.

Gausman has faced the White Sox four times in his career, but not since 2018 with the Orioles. He has fashioned a career 1.26 ERA (2 ER/14.1 IP) against the White Sox over two starts and two relief appearances.
