It might also not be the best time to change your future bets in regards who you think will win the Worl Series. Yes, some teams are out to a fast start while others are still stuck in the starting gate, but this is something that we see every single year. The harsh reality is that in a 162-game season, there are going to be some serious highs and lows experienced by every team, with some of those coming in the very early going. You don’t really expect to see any massive odds shifts in the first week of the season, but they do happen, which is what we are going to look at here. For all the teams we talk about here, we will supply you with their opening odds to win the World Series, as well as where those odds are now, so let’s jump right in.

LA Dodgers Odds +320

Given the money the Dodgers have spent in putting together their 2024 squad, it’s no real surprise to see that they are in as the favorite to win the World Series this year. That said, this team has not been shy about throwing money at the best talent in the league, but the results have not been what they would have expected from that level of spending. The Dodgers are out to a 5-2 start to the season and are sitting atop the West, which is exactly where you would expect them to be. They will be a little concerned about having already surrendered 34 runs, but I think they will tighten up as the season progresses. They currently sit at +340.

Atlanta Braves Odds +450

You cannot deny that the Braves have one of the most complete teams in the MLB, but you also have to be concerned that they have gone out in the opening round of the playoffs in each of the past 2 seasons, with the Phillies taking them out both times. There is nothing they can do to change that now, though, so the focus is going to be on getting back to the postseason to try again. Atlanta exacted some revenge with a series win over the Phillies to start the season and they are now at 3-1. They have hammered in 34 runs and surrendered just 12 through those opening 4 games. Their current odds are +430.

Houston Astros Odds +700

We said at the top of this piece that now is not the time for any team to start pushing the panic button, but you can bet that Astros fans have their hands poised over the alarm. They started the season with a 4-game home stand against the New York Yankees, a series that saw Houston swept. In fairness, 2 of the 4 games were decided by a single run, and they did bounce back by taking their opening game against the Blue Jays in a 10-0 rout. Still, losing to a potential playoff opponent in such devastating fashion delivers some cause for concern, with the Astros odds now sitting at +900.

New York Yankees Odds +900

Yankees fans have high expectations of their team and rarely refuse to accept any sort of excuse for poor performances. That said, even the most die-hard fans have to admit that the injury woes of last season made any attempt at a playoff run futile. The Yankees had a solid offseason and came into 2024 with expectations once again at high levels. Yes, it’s early, but the results to this point have been great, with the Yankees winning all 5 of their games to this point. They have scored 26 runs in those games, but perhaps more importantly, have surrendered just 13. The East is going to be tough, so getting out to a fast start is important. The Yankees current odds are at +950.

Baltimore Orioles Odds +1400

It has taken some time for the Baltimore Orioles to build an exciting new squad, but winning the AL East last season was a sign that those efforts are paying off. The next goal is to go on a deep playoff run and win the World Series, but will this be the year that we see it happen? The bookies don’t seem totally convinced just yet, but this team can make that opinion change if they can continue the way they started this season. They took 2 of 3 from the Angels to start things off, and then went on to beat the Royals. Neither of the teams they have faced are likely to be anywhere near the postseason, but picking up wins is still important, The Orioles odds have shortened to +1200.

Texas Rangers Odds +1400

What better way to end this preview than to look at the team that ended last season as the World Series winners. Despite coming in as the defending champions, the bookies are of the belief that there are better options in the American League, especially with the Yankees expected to be back in a big way. Texas appears to have picked up right where they left off, winning 3 of their first 4 games of the season and putting together a +12 run differential in the process. They have faced a couple of very decent teams in the Chicago Cubs and the Tampa Bay Rays, so that early record might even be a little better than it looks. Despite all that, the Rangers have seen their odds drift out to +1500.

As you can see, there hasn’t really been any real dramatic shift in the odds, although fans of the Houston Astros might argue that point. We are going to keep an eye on the odds all season long, checking in regularly to see which direction they are moving. Until the next time, let’s play some ball and cash some winning tickets.

World Series Favorites

We are a couple of weeks into the new MLB season, which as we all know, is much too soon to start talking about who might go on and win the World Series. History has shown that teams who come out of the gate quickly often have a tough time maintaining that pace, while the slow starters sometimes begin to pick up steam and make a run that propels them to the top and sees their odds change dramatically over the course of the season. The odds will change for every team, one way or another, and while it is indeed to early to start making big predictions, we thought it might be fun to compare where teams are now in comparison to their preseason World Series Odds.

Favorites, Smart Picks and Dark Horses for the MLB Season after Week 2

Favorites and Smart Picks

Prior to the start of the season, it was the LA Dodgers who were the clear favorites to win it all. This is no real surprise, as they have been the favorites for the past few seasons given their ability to spend money and lure in the biggest names in the game. The Dodgers are off to a good start, putting together a 12-4 record, while includes going 6-1 at home. They certainly deserve to be the favorite to win the World Series. Right now, they sit at +430.

Over in the American League, the Toronto Blue Jays are at +660 to win the championship. They too are living up to their billing, putting together an 11-6 record, which is good enough to have them sitting atop the AL East. It does look as though that is going to be a very competitive division, though, so certainly one to keep an eye on.

The New York Mets are at +820 to win the World Series and look like the smart pick, too, at the moment. We say that because they are very much living up to expectations at 13-5 on the season, but also because the NL East looks to be pretty weak, with no other team sitting above .500 right now.

Dark Horses

The San Francisco Giants are currently sitting at +1600 to win the World Series, but those odds might not stay that way for long. They are at 12-5 on the season and are just a half game off the pace being set by the LA Dodgers atop the NL West. Maintaining that pace might be tough, but the Giants are looking very good on offense and defense in the early going.

With their current odds of +2600 to win the World Series, not a lot of bettors are dropping money on the Seattle Mariners. They are on a great run of form right now, winning 8 of their last 10, which has them sitting atop the AL West. I don’t see them staying there, but I would ride them while they are hot.

It is maybe odd to have the New York Yankees as a dark horse, but their current odds of +1175 suggests that it’s exactly how they need to be labeled. The Yankees are pushing the Jays at the top of the AL East in the early going, putting together a 10-6 record. If they are to continue to compete for the top spot, they will need to be better on the road than their current .500 record.
