Sometimes, when a team has their back to the wall, they find a way to dig deep and find some resolve, or perhaps their opponent gets a little too cocky. That is where the Dallas Mavericks find themselves at the moment, as they head into Game 4 of the NBA Finals in an 0-3 hole against a Boston Celtics team that has only dropped 2 games through the entire playoffs.

Are we about to witness the end and the crowning of a new champion, or can Dallas hold off what now looks to be the inevitable? The Celtics are in as a modest 1-point favorite for Game 4, with the point total set at 211 ½.

As we have watched the 2024 NBA playoffs progress, I’m sure many of us have started to see that the outcome looks to be inevitable. You very often have to watch teams fight and claw their way to a championship, but there have been no such issues for the Boston Celtics, who look set to take the championship without ever looking in any type of peril.

Much was made about their home record during the regular season, losing just 4 times in their own building, but this is a team that has yet to drop a road game in these playoffs. The dominance has continued against the Mavericks, with the Celtics now 6-0-1 ATS in their last 7 meetings with Dallas.

They won all 7 of those games, too, so there is little to suggest that they are about to throw this series away. All 3 games to this point have gone UNDER the posted total.

I think that we were all in the belief that Dallas might make this series interesting with a win at home in Game 3, but that game simply followed the plot of the previous 2 outings, with the Celtics looking just too good and stepping on the gas a little whenever it looked required.

I think even the most optimistic Mavericks fan would be quick to agree that a Game 4 win would now just be delaying the inevitable, but this team will come out and fight.

If there is something to consider here, it’s that Boston might prefer to win the championship on home court and might not be totally up for this game, but I also think that they are professional enough to want to get this over and done with as quickly as possible, which spells bad news for the Mavericks.

Sweeps are not that common in the NBA Finals, with the last one coming in 2018, with the one before that coming in 2007. That might be enough to have some people taking a chance on the Mavericks in Game 4, but I can’t bet against Boston at this point.
