College Basketball Best Betting Opportunities for February 22nd, 2023

North Carolina Tar Heels (-7) at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Time: 9:00 PM EST
TV: ESPN

No college basketball team in the nation has been as disappointing as the North Carolina Tar Heels. The preseason number one team in the nation is currently just 16-11 on the season as in serious danger of missing the first NCAA Tournament since 2010. It should be noted that they would have missed the tournament in 2020 as well, but that event of course, never took place.

While this team has been incredibly disappointing, the Tar Heels still boast one of the most talented starting fives in the nation. If they are able to sneak into the dance, anything is possible. The first obstacle in their run towards the postseason is a road tilt in South Bend against the Fighting Irish.

The Irish have been disappointing this season as well, with a record of just 10-17 despite two legitimate senior stars in Dane Goodwin and Nate Laszewski, along with five-star point guard JJ Starling. The Irish’s biggest failing this season has come on their home court, where they have fallen seven times on the season. Mike Brey’s club has lost to the likes of Syracuse, Boston College, and Florida State at home this season.

Against the spread, the Irish have been even more embarrassing at home as they are one of the worst teams in the nation with a 4-13 record ATS at the Joyce Center. They have underperformed the number by -5.2 points per contest and have a margin of victory of just +1.1 points per game.

Carolina is far from a world-beater on the road this season as they are just 1-7-1 against the number on the road this season. However, given how this team came together at the end of last season, they get the benefit of the doubt here with a single-digit spread.

New Mexico Lobos at Boise State Broncos (-5.5)

Where: Extramile Arena, Boise, Idaho

Time: 10:30 PM EST
TV: FS1

This pick comes quite easily, as you have two teams heading in separate directions. New Mexico has essentially played themselves out of the at-large conversation, having lost five of their last seven games on the season, while Boise State has won eleven of their last thirteen contests. Boise State now sits at 21-6 on the season with an 11-3 mark in league play.

The Lobos have some legitimate stars in Jamal Mashburn Jr, Jaelen House, and Morris Udeze, but they have lost their mojo since the final week of January and have yet to regain it. The Lobos are just 1-6 against the spread in their seven games heading into the contest against San Jose State last Friday. They covered the spread easily in that game, which was shocking but can only be treated as an outlier at this point.

Boise State is currently streaking against the spread in the wrong direction but is covering the number by +3.3 points per contest on their home court this season. The Broncos are 12-1 straight up on their home court this season with a margin of victory of over 16 points per contest.
