Last meeting

The last time Miami had a game this big was in the 2017 ACC Championship Game against Clemson, which was also ranked No. 1 then. The Tigers rolled 38-3 and it had been all downhill for UM since until this year. Then-Clemson QB Kelly Bryant completed his first 15 passes in the rout. It was basically over after Clemson went up 14-0 in the first. Miami fell apart in the third quarter with a pair of Malik Rosier interceptions leading to 10 points for the Tigers. It was Miami’s first and still only appearance in the ACC title game.

The Hurricanes carry a 6-5 all-time series lead over the Tigers, but have dropped the last two matchups. UM is 2-0 all-time in road games in the series. Miami has not traveled to Clemson since 2010 – a 30-21 victory.

UM (3-0) has been off since trouncing rival Florida State 52-10 on Sept. 26. The 52 points were the most by either team in series history. Miami posted 38 points in the opening half, marking the most points scored by the Canes or Noles in a single half over their 65 meetings in series history. The 35-point halftime lead marked the most lopsided first half in the history of the Miami-Florida State rivalry, surpassing the 31-0 lead the Hurricanes had at the half in 1976.

The Hurricanes totaled 333 yards – 222 passing yards and 111 rushing yards – in the first half, while holding the Seminoles to just 105 total yards, posting nine tackles for loss, five sacks and forcing two turnovers before intermission. Altogether, the Hurricanes totaled six sacks and 13 tackles for loss, both season highs. The negative plays cost Florida State a combined 119 yards.

QB D’Eriq King, who connected with 10 different receivers while completing 29-of-40 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns, became the fourth different Miami starting quarterback to beat the Seminoles in the last four years, joining Malik Rosier (2017), N’Kosi Perry (2018) and Jarren Williams (2019).

For the season, King has thrown for 736 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. The nation’s active career sacks leader, DE Quincy Roche has totaled 28.0 sacks; the veteran pass-rusher leads Miami with 5.5 tackles for loss this year.

The Hurricanes are looking for their first win over the nation’s No. 1 team since an October 7, 2000 win over Florida State. UM’s last win over a No. 1 team on the road was Nov. 16, 1991 at Florida State. In the last 40 seasons, Miami has posted a 9-5 record against the top-ranked team by the Associated Press; its only game versus the No. 1 team since 2000 was in the 2017 ACC title game, a 38-3 loss.

The Tigers (3-0) have yet to be tested and handled Virginia 41-23 last week in a rematch of the 2019 ACC title game. Trevor Lawrence was 25-for-38 passing for 329 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Amari Rodgers. Travis Etienne totaled 187 yards from scrimmage, including 73 on the ground and a career-high and Clemson running back record 114 through the air.

The defense also had three sacks, and has now had multiple sacks in 25 of its last 26 games. Clemson did not turn the ball over and produced an 11th consecutive game without turning the ball over multiple times. Clemson’s 11-game streak with one giveaway or fewer is the program’s longest in Coach Dabo Swinney’s tenure.

The 300-yard passing game was Lawrence’s second of the season and the ninth of his career. His ninth 300-yard passing game moved him past Charlie Whitehurst for sole possession of the third-most in Clemson history.

By scoring a touchdown in the 38th different game in his career on that run, Etienne tied the FBS record for most career games with a touchdown (by any means), held jointly by Florida’s Tim Tebow (38 games from 2006-09) and Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Dixon (38 from 2012-15). Etienne (5,581) passed Dalvin Cook (5,399), Duke Johnson (5,526), Ted Brown (5,565) and Jamison Crowder (5,575) to move into fourth on the ACC’s leaderboard for career all-purpose yardage.

The win extended Clemson’s winning streak on Saturdays to 46, passing the 1953-57 Oklahoma Sooners for the longest such streak in FBS history.

Clemson enters Saturday’s game with a 12-9 all-time record in games in which both teams enter ranked in the AP Top 10. That includes a 7-2 mark since the start of the 2016 season. It will represent the fifth such matchup in Death Valley history.

Clemson is attempting to win a 25th consecutive game against an ACC opponent, including postseason play. A 25-game winning streak against conference opponents would move past the 1998-2001 Florida State Seminoles for sole possession of the third-longest streak in conference history. The Tigers also are looking for 25th consecutive home game to extend its school record for the longest home winning streak in school history.
