Last Meeting

Pittsburgh leads the all-time series 5-1 and won the last one in 2014 vs. Carolina, 37-19. Roethlisberger threw two 7-yard touchdown passes to Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell ran for 147 yards and Pittsburgh outrushed the Panthers 264-42. Roethlisberger finished 22 of 30 for 196 yards, and Brown had 90 yards receiving on 10 catches. LeGarrette Blount ran for 118 yards, marking the first time since 1986 the Steelers have had two 100-yard rushers in a game. Cam Newton finished 24 of 35 for 250 yards but was a non-factor running the ball with 7 yards on two carries.

Why Bet on Carolina?

The Panthers won their third straight Sunday, 42-28 vs. Tampa. Cam Newton completed 19 of 25 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns, running back Christian McCaffrey racked up 157 total yards and scored twice and second-year wide receiver Curtis Samuel scored on a 33-yard double reverse and hauled in a 19-yard TD catch midway through the fourth quarter.

The Panthers (6-2) are on a roll midway through the season, scoring 99 points in the last nine quarters. Their 35 points in the first half vs. Tampa were a franchise record. Greg Olsen caught 6-of-6 targets for 76 yards and a touchdown. The catches and yards were both new season highs in what was easily Olsen’s best game of 2018. Olsen continues to look 100 percent healthy even as he plays on a foot that is expected to require offseason surgery. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said left tackle Matt Kalil (knee, injured reserve) will not return this week.

Newton has completed 67.3 percent of his passes through eight games. He’s on pace to break the single-season franchise record set by Steve Buerelein in 1998 (62.97). Newton’s passer rating is currently 100.8, which is ahead of his previous career high (99.4 in 2015). He’s already had five games with a rating of 100 or better, which equals the total he had last season. Newton has also been deadly in the red zone. He is 21-of-29 with 11 touchdown passes and zero interceptions for a league-best passer rating of 124.7.

Newton has been sacked just 12 times, the fourth lowest total in the league. The single-season franchise record for fewest sacks surrendered is 20 given up in 2008.

Why Bet on Pittsburgh?

The Steelers won a fourth straight Sunday, 23-16 in Baltimore. James Conner had 107 rushing yards, 56 receiving yards, and a touchdown catch. Conner has four games with at least 100 rushing yards, 50 receiving yards and at least one touchdown this season, the most such games by a player in a single season in NFL history.

Conner, who has 1,085 scrimmage yards (706 rushing, 379 receiving) and 10 total touchdowns (nine rushing, one receiving) this season, is the only player in franchise history with at least 1,000 scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns in the team’s first eight games of a season.

Panthers vs Steelers is one of the best Thursday Night Games of the Season.

Ben Roethlisberger completed 28-of-47 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns while adding four yards and another touchdown on two carries. He took an enormous hit from Darius Smith after taking off on a fourth-quarter scramble, coming down hard on his right shoulder. Roethlisberger looked to be in serious pain but returned after missing just one snap. Antonio Brown notched five catches for 42 yards and a touchdown on 11 targets.

Baltimore averaged 3.8 yards per carry, and the Steelers found success rushing the passer against the Ravens’ two backup offensive tackles, drawing two sacks and two holding calls.

Could this be the week that Pro Bowl running back Le’Veon Bell returns? Doubtful. The Steelers have had no Week 10 contact with Bell. Bell faces a deadline of Nov. 13 to report in order to play at all this season. Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, Bell must report to the Steelers by 4 p.m. ET next Tuesday or he will be ineligible for the remainder of the season. The collective bargaining agreement mandates that any player on a contract or on a tender must report by the Tuesday after the 10th week of the season if he wants to play that year.
