For the Pittsburgh Steelers, while they have struggled, they are still in line to contend for a postseason spot. The Steelers are 7-5, which is tied with three other teams. There are four teams for three spots as wildcard teams. The Steelers were beaten at home by Arizona in Week 13. Pittsburgh is two games behind the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are favorites in this game. Pittsburgh is -6 at home over the Patriots. The total for this game is listed at 31.5 points. Pittsburgh is -290 on the moneyline, while New England comes into the game at +230.
Not Banner Season in Pittsburgh
What an ugly game on Sunday for the Pittsburgh Steelers. It did not go well. The final score was 24-10, and it got ugly following the injury to Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett. Pickett will not play in this game, which means Mitchell Trubuisky will be under center. Known best for his time in Chicago, Trubisky has played in two games, passing 32 times for a touchdown and two interceptions.
He will look to pass the football to George Pickens and Dionte Johnson. Pickens has 662 yards on the season, but just three touchdowns. Johnson has just one receiving touchdown on the season. Pittsburgh also is also using their tight end Pat Freiermuth for 18 receptions and two touchdowns.
The run game has been pretty ineffective for Pittsburgh. Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren have been sharing the load as of late. They have a total of 236 carries for 1140 yards and 7 touchdowns. Pickett was also running the football at times for Pittsburgh, with 39 carries, 51 yards and a touchdown.
Steelers Defense Still Solid
The defense for the Steelers is led by one of the best players in all of the National Football League. TJ Watt has 13.5 sacks on the season. He has caused 90 yards lost on sacks this season. The Steelers defense also has 12 interceptions, with one of them returned for a touchdown by Alex Highsmith. The Steelers also have 16 fumbles, with 8 of them recovered.
Steelers Final Five
Pittsburgh is starting the first of their final five games of the season. The Steelers are at Indianapolis next, before hosting the Bengals in their home finale. The final two games for the Steelers are on the road at the Seahawks, and then to Baltimore.
Season to Forget in New England
The season has been one to forget for the Patriots. New England has just two wins, and both in the division. The Patriots beat the Jets 15-10 in Week 3, and 29-25 against the Bills later in the season. Since their last win, the Patriots have dropped five in a row. In those five games, New England is scoring less than 10 points per game. Things got worse on Sunday, as they lost their top running back Rhamondre Stevenson to an ankle injury.
Stevenson had played every game for New England and rushed for 580 yards and four touchdowns. Now, veteran Ezekiel Elliott will get the call. The former Cowboys running back has 377 yards and two touchdowns on the season.
The receiving core has been ineffective this season, and also banged up. Demario Douglas leads the team with 410 yards on the season, but is questionable to play in this game for the Patriots. Douglas leads the team with 410 yards on the season. Kendrick Bourne anchors the team with four touchdowns.
The biggest issue for the Patriots has been their horrific quarterback play. Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe have a combined 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions this season. Jones was sacked 22 times in 11 games, and could not keep the offense on the field.
Defensive Stars for Patriots
Despite the struggles, the patriots still do have some guys on the defensive side that can get the job done. Ja’Whaun Bently and Christian Barmore are tied with four sacks on the season. Kyle Dugger leads the team with two interceptions. Brandon Schooler is the lone Patriots defensive player to score a touchdown, as he returned a fumble for a score.
Finish the Season
The Patriots still have a shot at the #1 seed in the NFL Draft. They play three of their final five games on the road. Their home game in Week 15 is against Kansas City, before back to back games at the Broncos and Bills. The final game of the season for the Patriots is at home against the New York Jets.
