Thursday marks a week of Olympic games in Beijing as the mixed curling and a few other events got started even before last week’s opening ceremonies.

Wednesday was the best day of these Olympic games so far for the United States, with Chloe Kim capturing gold in the women’s snowboard halfpipe and Nathan Chen also coming through with the men’s singles gold in figure skating.

What Has Already Happened 

Chloe Kim was a -435 favorite to take home the gold in the women’s halfpipe. Those are hefty odds because anything can happen on three runs, but Kim had the gold essentially clinched with her 94 point initial run. There were a lot of falls after that as the competition pulled out all the stops to try to meet that mark but ultimately, it was Kim that stood alone for her 2nd straight gold in the event. 

Nathan Chen started the men’s figure skating competition on Tuesday with the highest short program score in history (113.97), which gave him a big lead that he never relinquished. Chen sealed the deal in Wednesday’s free skate to become the 7th American man to win Olympic gold and the first since Evan Lysacek in 2010. 

Jessie Diggins of St. Paul missed out on her chance for a second medal of these games with a disappointing 8th place finish in the women’s 10km cross-country skiing event. Her past success in this event was in the freestyle format, but this was ‘classical.’ Therese Johaug of Norway won the race. 

One freestyle team that did not disappoint was the mixed team aerials skiing squad, who captured the gold medal over favorite China. They are the first and only team to ever win a gold in this event as it made its Olympics debut. 

In other events, France’s Irene Schouten continued her impressive games, following up her 3000km record-setting performance with a win in the 5000km speed skating. Germany picked up gold in the team relay of the luge, 

Thursday’s Competition Rundown

The biggest highlight of Thursday night’s games is Shaun White culminating an impressive Olympic career with his final runs on the halfpipe. White has three Olympic gold medals in his illustrious career already but barely snuck into the finals and is a +400 underdog to win this behind Ayumu Hirano (+105) and Scotty James (+255). 

Mikaela Shiffrin will try to salvage a very disappointing showing in Beijing as she has decided to compete in the Super-G in women’s alpine skiing. Shiffrin has failed to finish in her first two slalom events of these games and is thus is listed at +1325 for this event. 

If you’ve got some time to kill, the 10000km men’s speed skating event goes down on Thursday, where American Joey Mantia (+390) is expected to battle Belgium’s Bart Swings (+260) for the gold. 

The USA women are -6.5 goal favorites over the Czech Republic in the playoff quarterfinals. 

The U.S. men also face a challenge in curling, where they are +210 underdogs against Great Britain. 

Heading into Thursday’s competition Germany still leads the pack with six gold medals while Norway is in the hunt with five. After a big Wednesday, the U.S. has upped their tally to four, and maybe with a miracle from Shaun White in the halfpipe can add to that number.
