This year, a trio of Russian-born players will all be looking to claim their second titles in their homeland when top-seeded defending champion Daniil Medvedev, No. 4 seed Andrey Rublev and No. 7 seed Karen Kachanov all take to the court in St. Petersburg.

Medvedev won this event a year ago by defeating Croatian Borna Coric 6-3, 6-1. Blossoming world No. 10 Andrey Rublev triumphed in Moscow in 2019 and Kachanov won this event in 2018. Rublev has already won three titles this season, including the ATP 500 title last month at the Hamburg European Open where he took out world No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas. Rublev also reached the quarterfinals at the US Open before losing to Medvedev and Roland Garros where he fell against Tsitsipas.

After reaching the semifinals in the US Open, Medvedev was bounced in the first round in Hamburg and at Roland Garros while Kachanov is coming off a run to the fourth round at Roland Garros. The St. Petersburg Open field also features stars like three-time slam winner Stan Wawrinka, Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Milos Raonic, veterans like Dan Evans and Feliciano Lopez and reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion Jannik Sinner.

In the second round Medvedev could face the 19-year-old Jannik Sinner, who dispatched Tsitsipas in Rome and both, David Goffin and Alexander Zverev at Roland Garros. Kachanov and Cincinnati finalist Milos Raonic could meet in the quarterfinals. Denis Shapovalov leads the loaded bottom half of the draw but he could face Wawrinka in the quarterfinals. Before that meeting could happen though, 2019 semifinalist Egor Gerasimov could face Wawrinka in the second round. Rublev faces Vasek Pospisil in the first round and could take on American Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinal.

On Tuesday, Feliciano Lopez will face seventh-seeded Borna Coric.

Feliciano Lopez has won both career head-to-head meetings against Borna Coric. First, the young Croatian retired before taking the court in their schedule 2016 US Open meetings. Lopez got Coric 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 in their 2018 meeting in Beijing. This time around though, I like Coric to win and advance as he runs the older Lopez and finishes him off late. I’m thinking Lopez is savvy enough to take a set, but Coric is the pick to get it done in three!

Pick: Borna Coric in 3 Sets

Kachanov faces off against Australian James Duckworth.

While Karen Kachanov has lost four of his last eight matches and just hasn’t had a very successful in going 17-11 on the year with no titles, James Duckworth has lost three of his last four matches and is just 4-5 on the year. The world No. 93 has no chance of getting the upset in this one against the world No. 17, who is fairly desperate to make a deep run in this event.

Pick: Karen Kachanov in Straight Sets

On Wednesday, Medvedev goes up against veteran Richard Gasquet while Shapovalov faces veteran Victor Troicki.
