ATP Betting Preview for the 2023 China Open

ATP Betting Preview for the 2023 China Open

The China Open, played at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, is an ATP/WTA tournament with more than two decades of history, but it hasn’t been played since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An ATP 500 level event, the tournament has attracted a deep field of talent in search of earning the winner’s share of the $3.6 million total prize purse.

The winner also receives 500 ATP ranking points, which could be huge for players on the cusp trying to crack the top eight to play in the ATP Finals.

Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming China Open tournament so you can bet against the ATP betting lines.

Event History

The China Open was first held in 1993, with American Michael Chang winning his first of three consecutive titles.

Other winners include Rafael Nadal (2005 and 2017), Andy Murray (2016), and six-time champion Novak Djokovic. Dominic Thiem defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the 2019 event.

Breaking Down the Draw

There are 32 entrants in the China Open, meaning there are no automatic byes for the top seeds. The top half of the draw is headlined by Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner, and Casper Ruud.

Alcaraz, the former world No. 1, has the easiest path to the semifinals. Others in the top half to look out for include Felix Auger-Aliassime, Dan Evans, and Karen Khachanov.

Second seed Daniil Medvedev is the top-ranked player in the bottom half of the draw but faces an immediate tough test in the first round against Tommy Paul.

There’s an abundance of talent in the bottom half, including Alexander Zverev, Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Cam Norrie, and Murray.

China Open First-Round Matches

Alex De Minaur (-309) vs. Andy Murray (+210)

Australian Alex De Minaur meets Murray, a former China Open champion, in one of the headline matches in the first round. Surprisingly, De Minaur is 4-0 against Murray and has back-to-back two-set victories on clay and grass.

Murray has taken De Minaur to three sets, however, in their two meetings on hard courts.

Jan-Lennard Struff (+134) vs. Casper Ruud (-189)

While Ruud is ranked 13 spots higher than Jan-Lennard Struff, he hasn’t had much success against the 33-year-old German veteran. Ruud is 0-3 in three career matches against Struff, recently losing to him at the ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo.

He also lost to Struff at the US Open in 2019. Ruud has to break through at some point, but +134 is great value for a player who is unbeaten against his opponent.

China Open Final Betting Predictions

Following a disappointing semifinal loss at the US Open, it’s hard to imagine Alcaraz, with the benefit of three weeks of rest, not winning the top half of the draw. He has had a great year, winning Wimbledon for the first time, and has cemented his status as a top player in the sport.

The bottom half of the draw is wide open but certainly there for the taking for a player like Zverev, who has been gradually getting back to form since returning from an ankle injury earlier this year and is coming off of a win at the Chengdu Open.
