Libéma Open Contenders Emerge: Unveiling Upsets & Betting ATP Lines

An ATP/WTA 250 event held annually in the Netherlands, the Libema Open is one of the first grass court events of the season, although it was played on clay until 2018. It is being played in conjunction with the BOSS Open in Stuttgart, Germany, meaning there’s relatively diminished fields for both the men’s and women’s draws. 

The men’s draw, however, features top-10 players Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner, as well as other talented players, including Borna Coric and Alex de Minaur. Veronika Kudermetova, the world No. 11, is the top seed in the women’s draw. 

Tim van Rijthoven and Ekaterina Alexandrova are the defending men’s and women’s champions.

Early Libema Open Updates

The top four seeds have yet to play in either draw as they earned automatic entries into the Round of 16. In early action in the men’s draw, Milos Raonic, the 2016 Wimbledon finalist who hasn’t played since 2021, defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4 and looked impressive in doing so. Swiss player Marc-Andrea Husler upset American Maxime Cressy 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). 

While there weren’t many surprises in the first round of the women’s draw, Canadian qualifier Carol Zhao defeated Ysaline Bonaventure and will play top seed Kudermetova in the second round. 

Must-Bet Libema Open Matches

Rinky Hijikata (+110) vs. Marc-Andrea Huesler (-138)

Rinky Hijikata, the lucky loser entrant into the Libema Open, won his first-round match against wildcard Gijs Brouwer after dropping the opening set and will play MA Huesler, who scored an upset victory in his opening-round match. Hijikata, a 22-year-old Australian ranked outside of the top-100, has never played Huesler.

Huesler is 8-14 this season on the ATP Tour, while Hijikata is just 2-3, having played most of his matches on the Challenger Tour. Huesler is a slight betting favorite and offers great value at -138 as he should benefit from his win over Cressey. He’s also 6-foot-5 and covers a lot more of the court than the 5-foot-10 Hijikata.

Polina Kudermetova (+400) vs. Liudmila Samsonova (-600)

Polina Kudermetova, the sister of top-seed Veronika, is a talented 20-year-old Russian who has climbed within the top 150 players in the world this season. She defeated Yuan Yue 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round, while her higher-ranked second-round opponent Liudmila Samsonova had to battle for a 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3) victory over qualifier Lena Papadakis. 

Coincidentally, Samsonova is playing doubles with Polina’s sister this week. Samsonova and Polina have never played each other on the WTA Tour. Samsonova is 17-7 in her career on grass, while Polina hadn’t played a match on grass on the WTA Tour until her first-round victory. An all-Kudermetova final would be interesting, but Samsonova is the smart bet here.

Veronika Kudermetova (-1000) vs. Carol Zhao (+600)

In another match of two players who haven’t played each other, Veronika Kudermetova, the top seed, takes on qualifier Carol Zhao in second-round action. Zhao is just 5-6 in her career on grass compared to Kudermetova, who is 19-13.

Including qualifiers, Zhao has been on court for more than 4 hours and 30 minutes at the Libema Open, while Kudermetova is rested, needing just 52 minutes to win her first-round match. Kudermetova is a two-time semifinalist at the Libema Open and should have little trouble advancing past Zhao, so don’t bet on an upset here. Take straight sets or parlay it with a Samsonova victory for added value.

Despite weather delays, the Libema Open is now onto the quarterfinals, with both the men’s and women’s draw decided. There have been upsets on both sides of the bracket, leaving some surprising names among the last eight players competing for a title. 

On the men’s side, Adrian Mannarino defeated world No. 22 Alex de Minaur rather convincingly 6-2, 6-3 in the second round. On the women’s side, world No. 21 Elena Rybakina, a two-time winner on the WTA Tour and a pre-tournament favorite, lost to American Shelby Rogers.

WTA – Veronika Kudermetova (+150) vs Belinda Bencic (-188)

This should be one of the most compelling of the four matches on the women’s side. Bencic, ranked No. 17, scored straight-set victories in her first two matches. Kudermetova, ranked No. 24, advanced to the quarters via walkover after dropping the first set against Anna Blinkova in her Round of 16 matches.

ATP – Felix Auger-Aliassime (-250) vs Karen Khachanov (+200)

Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime is coming off of an impressive performance at Roland Garros, where he took Rafael Nadal to five sets but didn’t exactly dominate his Round of 16 opponent Tallon Griekspoor. Karen Khachanov, meanwhile, is hoping to build upon his impressive three-set victory over Kamil Majchrzak in the Round of 16.

With the way the draw has shaped out, this could be a tougher match for either opponent than whoever they meet in the semifinals (Hugo Gaston or Tim Van Rijthoven), so there’s a strong chance the winner of this match will compete for a title. 

WTA – Shelby Rogers (-225) vs Kirsten Flipkins (+175)

Rogers looked impressive in her opening round match and is looking like a tournament favorite now after her upset victory over Rybakina. Her opponent, Kirsten Flipkins, looked just as impressive in her 6-1, 6-1 victory over American Ann Li. 

However, Flipkins is outside of the top 300 ranked players and is primarily known as a doubles player. Rogers, in search of her first singles title, has a great opportunity to advance to the semifinal.

ATP – Daniil Medvedev (-600) vs Ilva Ivashka (+400)

Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open winner, earned a first-round bye and began his grass-court season with a straight-set victory over Gilles Simon in the Round of 16. He’s the heavy favorite over his quarterfinal opponent Ilya Ivashka, but it’s worth noting they’ve split the prior two matches they’ve played.

Medvedev defeated Ivashka in the Round of 32 at Roland Garros in 2021, while Ivashka scored a straight-set victory in their 2018 clash in the first round of the Davis Cup between Russia and Belarus. 

This tournament should mean more for both players as Wimbledon has banned Russians and Belarussians from competing this year.

Finals Predictions

Medvedev vs. Auger-Aliassime would be the highest-profile match possible on the men’s side, but don’t be surprised if Khachanov beats the Canadian and advances to the final. Medvedev should make it through to the final.

World No. 6 Aryna Sabalenka should go through her next two opponents to reach the final, where she will face Bencic.
