Carlos Alcaraz arrived on the scene last year by winning his first Grand Slam in New York and further cemented himself as the future of the sport by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final earlier this year.
Djokovic may have returned the favor in the final of the Western & Southern Open a few weeks ago but did so by the slimmest of margins, beating Alcaraz 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-4).
Djokovic certainly seems up to the challenge of a new and equal rival, but he’s unlikely to keep up with Alcaraz for the long grind of another Grand Slam.
Alcaraz, the 20-year-old world No. 1, is a remarkable 53-6 this season with six titles and should have added motivation to defend his title in New York, where he will be a fan favorite.

It’s tough to go way off the board in the men’s draw, where it’s unlikely anyone but Alcaraz or Djokovic wins. Not including Nadal, who isn’t playing, the last player outside of Alcaraz or Djokovic to win a Grand Slam was Daniil Medvedev at the 2021 US Open.
Medvedev hasn’t been in top form the last few weeks but is obviously always a worthy contender. Jannik Sinner may be the better bet, however.
Sinner won the Canadian Open at the beginning of August, beating the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Tommy Paul, and Alex de Minaur along the way.
The 22-year-old world No. 6 is 41-12 this season with two titles and is on the cusp of Grand Slam success. He made the semifinals at Wimbledon and the fourth round at the Australian Open.

Women’s tennis has been dominated by Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina in the last two years. Marketa Vondrousova had a great showing at Wimbledon, but don’t expect her to repeat that success at the US Open. Coco Gauff is next up.
Guaff, a 19-year-old American, has been the next big thing in women’s tennis for what seems like five years already and is finally starting to play as advertised.
Gauff won her fifth career title at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati and improved to 38-13 this season. What’s more impressive is that she won in Cincinnati by beating Swiatek and Karolina Muchova in the semis and final, respectively.

If there’s anyone worth rooting for as a sentimental favorite, it’s Ons Jabeur. The US Open is about creating stories, and her winning might be one of the best ones outside of Gauff winning on the home court.
Jabeur, a 28-year-old Tunisian, has had several chances to become the first Arab woman to win a Grand Slam but has consistently come up short.
Jabeur was a finalist in Wimbledon and last year’s US Open. She lost again in the finals of this year’s Wimbledon, even though she was the clear betting favorite. She’s coming off a quarter-final loss to Sabalenka in the Cincinnati Masters but should be motivated in New York.
