2022 NFL AFC West Odds Analysis: Chiefs, and Chargers Betting Favorites, Raiders Could Surprise

Written by on September 6, 2022

Every year in the NFL, there is always one division that looks to be that much better than the rest. This season, that award is likely to go to the AFC West, as you could make a solid argument for each of the 4 teams in the division. There is very much the possibility that we might see 3 teams from the West in the playoffs this season, but as we all know, things don’t necessarily go as expected. There is still a favorite to win the West, but as you will see from the odds, this thing has the potential to go a variety of different ways. We are going to try and untangle all of this and make some NFL AFC Conference Betting predictions for the coming season, so let’s take a closer look at the West, starting with how it all played out last season.

How Things Went in 2021

It was pretty much same as it has been in the West for the past few years in 2021, with the Kansas City Chiefs once again finishing on top with 12 wins. They finished ahead of the Raiders, who overcame some off-field drama to end the season with 10 wins. They were followed by the LA Chargers with 9 wins and the Denver Broncos with 7. I expect this division to be even tighter this year, so let’s move on and take a look at the current odds.

2022 Odds and Division Prediction

As mentioned already, it was the Kansas City Chiefs who won the division last season, and who also came within a game of reaching the Super Bowl again. They were forced to make some changes in the offseason after seeing Tyreek Hill move on, but the bookies seem to think they will be fine and have them in as the favorite at odds of +163.

If you look at some of the prop bets ahead of the new season, you see that Justin Herbert of the LA Chargers is up among the favorites to win the MVP. If he can deliver that type of season, then the current odds of +224 for the Chargers to win the West might well prove to be a steal. If anyone is going to knock the Chiefs out of top spot, it might well be the Chargers.

The Denver Broncos think they have a team that compete, with the signing of Russell Wilson at QB being the move that has a lot of people jumping on the Broncos bandwagon. The question here is whether that change will be enough, especially in a division that is so strong. The bookies seem to think it might be enough, as they have Denver in at +260.

There is some not so quiet optimism going on in Las Vegas right now, with a lot of fans pumped for the start of the season. The arrival of Davante Adams as a legit partner to Derek Carr has a lot of people fired up, and if those two can connect the way they did in college, the Raiders might well prove to be the surprise of the division. They are pretty close to the other teams in terms of the odds and are currently on the board at +640.
