NCAAF 2020 Bowl Games SU Picks December 22nd Edition

Written by on December 22, 2020

Bowl season began on Monday night, with Appalachian State running roughshod over North Texas in a lopsided 56-21 win. While it was fun to watch the Mountaineers put on a bit of an offensive show, we can only hope that the rest of the games this week, and the remainder of the bowl season, are a little bit more competitive. As we prepare to bring you out SU picks for this week, it has to be said that bowl games tend to be a little more difficult to handicap. You never really know which teams are up for it and which would sooner be elsewhere until after the games start. Still, we have to take our shot and come up with some selections. Let’s get right to it so you can keep betting against their NCAAF odds.

NCAA Football SU Picks for the Bowl Games | Dec. 22nd Edition

Buffalo Bulls over Marshall Thundering Herd

A pair of 1-loss teams will meet up in the Camelia Bowl on Christmas Day in a matchup that has all the makings of a very good contest. The Thundering Herd finished the season with a 7-1 record, and when you consider that they have won all 6 of their meetings with Buffalo, you get the feeling that they would probably be a solid pick here. The problem, though, is that this Bulls offense is an absolute juggernaut, averaging close to 48 points in their 6 games this season. Stretching back to last season, they have also lost just 1 game out of their last 9. They are also 8-1 SU in the last 9 games that they started as a favorite, which they will do here. That is enough to put them over the top, in my opinion.

Georgia State Panthers over Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

We now shift our attention to Saturday and the LendingTree Bowl, with Georgia State and Western Kentucky set to square off. The Hilltoppers are one of the teams that benefited from the strange nature of the season, making it to a bowl game despite posting a 4-6 record on the season. They did end the season quite well, winning 2 in a row to close things out. Georgia State won their final two games of the year as well, a run that helped them move above .500 for the season at 5-4. There are a couple of trends that have helped me make a decision here, starting with the fact that the Hilltoppers are winless in the last 6 games that they started as an underdog. On the flipside, Georgia State is 6-1 SU in their last 7 starts as a favorite.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers over Liberty Flames

The FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl goes Saturday in a game that features a pair of teams coming off very strong seasons. The Flames came close to an unbeaten season, but ended up coming up just short after losing in the penultimate week of the season, a loss that left them at 9-1. The Chanticleers are sure to still have a little bit of a chip on their shoulder after seeing the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game cancelled this past weekend. They will come into this one looking to maintain their unbeaten record, which currently sits at 11-0. I do not see them passing up that opportunity and I like them to win comfortably here.
