We got to see what he brings to the table last season, though, as he led Baylor to a 13-2 season, which just happened to be the best in school history. Before we dive into the contender portion of this piece, I thought it might be a good idea to look at where your betting money should go in regards the win total we can expect from Baylor this season. If we knock over that domino correctly, the rest will basically fall into place. Given what they did last season, it may be a little surprising to see the Bears win total for the coming season set at 7 ½, but there is a very good reason for that.

Last year, both Baylor losses came on the road, and their road schedule this season is brutal. Besides hitting the road to face Oklahoma and Texas, they will also need to travel to face Iowa State, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. While there are some winnable games in there, the Bears are going to need to dig deep to take them all, which seems rather unlikely to me. I would still look at playing the OVER on the win total, but will that be enough to make them a legit contender?

Are the Baylor Bears a Contender in 2022?

The first thing we need to look at here is the Big 12 Conference as a whole. Without winning that, there is no point in even having a discussion about a National Championship. Now, Baylor has made it into the conference championship game in 2 of the last 3 seasons, with that nightmare 2020 season being the exception. They won it last season, but that came in a year where the Oklahoma Sooners underwhelmed. The Sooners are the favorites to bounce back and win the Big 12 this year, but with a new head coach and a new system coming, might there be some growing pains? The Bears are listed at +600 to win the conference, with 3 teams sitting ahead of them, and they might just be worth taking a risk on.

They are very much in the longshot category when it comes to the National Championship and are currently sitting at odds of +7500 in there. I think that tells you all you need to know about this team and where the bar is set. Potentially, they could win the Big 12, but I think that will be about as good as it gets for the Baylor Bears in 2022.
