Betting Non-Conference College Football Spring Games To Win Big

While conference play produces a lot of drama for the college football season, watching teams lock horns in non-conference play can provide insight into which direction teams are heading. Until the College Football Playoff is expanded, challenging yourself in the non-conference and taking a loss will put most teams’ playoff hopes in jeopardy, if not sinking them entirely.

Here’s a look at some non-conference college football games that are worth betting on.

South Carolina Gamecocks at North Carolina Tar Heels (-1.5)

The Tar Heels and Gamecocks were once both in the Atlantic Coast Conference together, but South Carolina abandoned the league in 1971 because it felt that North Carolina and other tobacco road schools had too much influence over the league. Since the Gamecocks left the league, the two teams have met less frequently.

After this season, the two teams won’t meet again until 2028. The Tar Heels lead the all-time series between the schools 35-20-4, but South Carolina has won eight of the past 11 meetings. This year’s game will be intriguing, as North Carolina’s high-powered offense will be led by sophomore quarterback Drake Maye.

The Gamecocks saw improvement last season under coach Shane Beamer, finishing 8-5 overall and were ranked No. 23 in both polls. North Carolina should win this one, but South Carolina’s defense could help them spring an upset.

LSU Tigers (-2.5) vs Florida State Seminoles

The Tigers and Seminoles played a memorable opener last season. Florida State spoiled Brian Kelly’s debut as LSU coach after the Tigers missed an extra point with no time left on the clock in a 24-23 Seminoles’ victory.

LSU would quickly recover with transfer quarterback Jayden Daniels, who helped lead the Tigers to a surprising SEC West crown.

Florida State also had a strong season, finishing 10-3 and ranked in the top 25. The Seminoles also return quarterback Jordan Davis. Florida State is eager to reestablish itself as a southern power and should make this a game. Playing in front of an Orlando, Fla., crown, Florida State may spring an upset.

Texas Longhorns (+7.5) at Alabama Crimson Tide

The Crimson Tide and Longhorns are two programs bold enough to play each other in a home-and-home instead of a neutral site contest. Texas’ most memorable moment of its 2022 season, where the Longhorns finished 8-5, was a one-point loss to Alabama early in the season.

Texas had taken a late lead that was overtaken when Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young led a drive that produced a game-winning field goal to cap the game.

This time around, the Longhorns will have more experience at quarterback with returning starter Quinn Ewers under center. Alabama will see a quarterback battler between sophomore Jalen Milroe and freshman Ty Simpson.

The Crimson Tide still have stars all over the field and are not to be underestimated, as their beatdown of Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl showed last season.
