Why Bet on Detroit?

Future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera had success in his career against the Twins, batting .308/.378/.540 with 50 doubles, a triple, 46 home runs and 163 RBI in 221 games. In 87 career games at Target Field, Cabrera is hitting .320/.380/.527 with 24 doubles, 15 home runs and 60 RBIs.

The Tigers are really banged up in the rotation. Here are the Tigers’ starting pitchers who have gone on the injured list since Opening Day: Matt Manning (shoulder), Tyler Alexander (elbow), Casey Mize (elbow), Michael Pineda (finger) and now Eduardo Rodriguez (ribs). Rodriguez was the latest to land on it Sunday. The severity of Rodriguez’s ribs injury is unclear, as is the Tigers’ plan for his rehab.

“We don’t know a ton more other than we’ve still got to rule out a couple of things to make sure there’s not a stress reaction in his ribcage,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “Something is still bothering him when he throws. We’re not going to be able to test him, and we’re certainly not going to put him out there, until he gets a battery of tests.”

Tarik Skubal is the only member of the original Opening Day rotation who is not on the injured list and the only member of the current group who is not a rookie. The Tigers have used 11 starting pitchers so far this year, which is tied for the most of any club this season (also, Tampa Bay).

It’s rookie right-hander Beau Brieske (0-3, 5.13) ERA on the mound Monday. Brieske was roughed up for six runs in 5 1/3 frames last Tuesday in a loss to the Rays. Brieske had a 1-2-3 third inning, but that was the only frame he completed without allowing a run, as the Rays had traffic all over the bases. He did pick up 11 whiffs on his 78 pitches and walked just one. Brieske would seem to be a candidate to be sent back down when Manning (shoulder) is ready, and that should be soon.

Brieske has never faced the Twins and is 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA on the road.

The Twins activated outfielder Trevor Larnach from the injured list Sunday. He had missed 13 games a right adductor strain. To make room for Larnach on the 26-man roster, the Twins have placed right-handed pitcher Cody Stashak on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder impingement. The 27-year-old made 11 relief appearances for the Twins this season, going 3-0, 3.86 ERA (16.1 IP, 7 ER), no walks, 15 strikeouts and a 0.98 WHIP.

The Twins are hitting .274 with runners in scoring position this year, the third highest in the AL and fifth best in baseball. They are batting .246 with two outs this season, the best average in the AL and sixth-best in baseball.

It’s right-hander Sonny Gray on the mound for the Twins. Gray (1-1) picked up his first win as a Twin against his former team, the Athletics, on Wednesday in Minnesota’s 14-4 rout. Gray limited the A’s to two runs on six hits and no walks while punching out five. It’s the first time this season that Gray has gone five innings and also the first time he didn’t issue any walks. On the downside, he garnered only four swinging strikes on 84 pitches.

Both of Gray’s good starts this season have come against Oakland, and his other three outings weren’t so good. He may now be rounding into form after spending some time on the injured list last month and then returning for a couple of short outings earlier in May.

This season, Gray has posted a .125 opponent average with two walks and eight strikeouts against left-handed hitters. He has a .267 batting average with seven walks and 12 strikeouts against right-handed hitters. In his career, Gray owns a .223 opponent batting average against left-handed hitters and a .238 batting average against right-handed hitters. Gray has consistently relied on six different pitches throughout his big-league career, per Baseball Savant. The vast majority of his strikeouts this season have come on his sinker.
