What is LIV Golf?

This year, the first ever LIV Golf Invitational series tees off with 8 events. The format is more Formula One style instead of individual tournament PGA style.

In the PGA, you and your caddy compete to win the top prize at each individual event. The PGA then crowns a champion, the player who wins the most prize money during the year.

PGA events revolve around four major championships: the Masters, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, and The Open Championship.

In the LIV Golf Invitational, teams compete in 7 events. The first 7 events will be for individual and team prizes. The final event, the eighth, is a 4-day, 4-round, match play knockout tournament where teams play for the $50 million grand prize.

All 12 teams receive a cut in the final Team Championship match. The further teams advance in the tournament, the more money they will make. Each player on each team receives 25% of the total their team earned at the Team Championship match.

The player with the most accumulated points, sort of like F1 drivers, wins the Individual Championship after the seventh tournament. The prize for the Individual Championship is $30 million.

A player must tee off in at least 4-of-7 events to win the Individual Championship.

What is the 2022 LIV Golf Schedule?

Individual events have a purse of $25 million. Each individual player receives a cut. The winner’s cut is $4 million.

$5 million goes to the top three teams with the winning team making $3 million. Second place makes $1.5 million and third place makes $500k.

The first 7 tournaments will play 3 rounds. Only in the Team Championship Tournament will 4 rounds happen.

  • Kevin Na
  • Charles Schwartzel
  • Sergio Garcia
  • Dustin Johnson
  • Ian Poulter
  • Martin Kaymer

  • Branden Grace
  • Graeme McDowell
  • Talor Gooch

Another player that has decided to join LIV is Bryson DeChambeau. He decided on June 8 to join. So isn’t on the LIV site.

Is LIV Golf a legit competitor to the PGA Tour?

With tons of money behind LIV Golf, and a unique take, the answer is yes, LIV is a true competitor to the PGA. The real key is for the PGA to keep their best players.

Already, the PGA has lost two of the youngest and best up and coming golfers on the planet in Bryson DeChambeau and Talor Gooch.

Dustin Johnson might be one of the top five players in the world. Phil Mickelson is a golfing legend. Lee Westood, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, and Martin Kaymer are well-respected.

If no more PGA Tour players defect, LIV Golf and the PGA can co-exist. But if the best players form the Tour continue to resign and go play at LIV, things could go south for the PGA.
