PGA 2023 The Open Championship Matchups to Must Watch and Bet On

The final major tournament of the season is here, with the 2023 Open Championship taking place later this week at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England. This will be the 13th Open Championship the venue has hosted, and first since 2014. The four-day individual stroke play event begins on Thursday, July 20th, and concludes on Sunday, July 23rd.

Rory McIlroy, fresh off his victory at the Scottish Open, returns to Royal Liverpool to try and capture his fifth major championship. McIlroy fired a four-day total of 271 (17-under) to defeat Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots a piece.

Last year’s winner, Cameron Smith, is back in action, attempting to become the first golfer since Tiger Woods (‘05, ‘06) to win back-to-back Open titles. Smith won the 150th Open Championship last year at St. Andrews, defeating Cameron Young by one stroke.

As the tournament nears, let’s look at some of the most intriguing The Open Championship matchups to keep an eye on this week.

Rory McIlroy vs. Cameron Smith

We pegged this matchup as the most intriguing of the week for numerous reasons. The first and most obvious is the PGA Tour versus LIV Golf battle between these two competitors.  The second, is both of these players have won the Claret Jug, with Smith winning it last year and McIlroy victorious on this course the last time the tournament was held here.

Smith has looked the part in recent major events, posting a T7 at the PGA Championship and solo fourth at last month’s U.S. Open. The Aussie has won twice on the LIV circuit, including two weeks ago at LIV London.

McIlroy carries all the momentum into Hoylake after his dramatic birdie-birdie finish at the Renaissance Club to capture his 24th PGA Tour victory. The four-time major champion is aiming for his first major win since 2014. After missing the cut at Augusta, Rory finished T7 at the PGA Championship and was runner-up at the U.S. Open.

Scottie Scheffler vs. Jon Rahm

The top two players in the world are sure to delight fans this week at Royal Liverpool. Scheffler and Rahm have dominated the PGA Tour this season and appear ready to fight for a Claret Jug. Both players are major winners, with Rahm holding a Green Jacket and U.S. Open title and Scheffler’s lone major coming at Augusta in 2022. Rahm’s best finish at an Open venue was a T3 in 2021 at Royal St. George’s, while Sheffler’s best came that same year with a T8.

This year, the odds are favoring these two to be in contention on Sunday. Scheffler has put together a run that rivals some of the astounding runs of Tiger Woods, finishing inside the top five in seven-straight events.

Rahm has been relatively quiet since winning the Masters in April. The Spaniard took home a solo second at the Mexico Open later in April but has only played four events since, his best finish a T10 at the U.S. Open.
