PGA Tour 2023 US Open Betting Analysis for the Best Matchups to Wager On

The week of the third major is upon us, with the best golfers on the planet heading to the Los Angeles Country Club for the 2023 U.S. Open. The 123rd playing of the major tournament takes place for the first time at this venue and the third time in the state of California over the last five years. Tournament play begins on Thursday, June 15th, and the four-day, stroke play event concludes on Sunday, June 18th.

One of the many ways to wager on the major tournament is head-to-head matchups. These matchups can be played round to round or over the course of the entire tournament.

We take a look below at some of the best matchups to play for this week’s tournament as the first round nears. It’s time to take a closer look at our US Open betting analysis so you can get all set to bet against the PGA Tour Odds.

Tyrell Hatton vs. Matt Fitzpatrick

A battle between two of England’s best, Fitzpatrick comes to LACC looking to defend his U.S. Open title. Hatton has been quietly one of the most consistent golfers on Tour this season, finishing top 20 or better in his last six events.

Fitzpatrick will be inundated with defending champion obligations heading up to Thursday’s start, and that time could deter the focus of the 28-year-old. Hatton is peaking at the right time and we like the 31-year-old to finish higher on the leaderboard this week than his fellow countryman.

Patrick Cantlay vs. Viktor Hovland

These two should both be in contention on Sunday with a shot at their first major victory. Cantlay has played well this season in the majors, finishing T14 at Augusta and T9 last month at the PGA Championship. Hovland comes to L.A. after winning the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago at Jack’s Place and has a T7 at the Masters and T2 at the PGA Championship already this year.

The games of both players fit a U.S. Open layout which is why they are considered pre-tournament favorites. If we had to give the edge it would be to Cantlay, who has been the better putter so far this season. Cantlay has back-to-back finishes at the U.S. Open of T15 and T14, so the 31-year-old has the pedigree to outpace Hovland this week.

Scottie Scheffler vs. Jon Rahm

The top two players in the world are naturally the top two betting favorites heading into the opening round of play. Scheffler has been outworldly this season, with 12 top-10 finishes in 16 events highlighted by a T5 or better in his last four outings. Rahm has four wins this season, including a Masters title for his second major win.

Rahm’s statistics are consistent, with very few flaws in his current game. Scheffler is no. 1 in every important category but putting, where the 26-year-old is an astonishing 148th on tour. If Scheffler can clean up the flatstick, which we expect he will, look for former Texas Longhorn to win his second major title and hand Rahm a head-to-head loss.
