PGA Tour 2022 US Open Betting Analysis for the Best Matchups to Wager On

The 122nd U.S. Open begins Thursday, June 16 at 7:45 a.m. EST. The third of four majors on the PGA Tour this season takes place at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston.

After three days of lead-in coverage focusing heavily on LIV Golf and the players (Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, and Bryson DeChambeau, among others) who have committed to the Saudi-funded tour, we can finally start talking about actual golf.

Defending champion Jon Rahm comes into the U.S. Open hoping to rebound from a string of poor performances at major championships this season, while Rory McIlroy, fresh off a victory at the RBC Canadian Open, is hoping to stand tall for the PGA Tour.

Both players will have to overcome challenges from one of the strongest fields of the year, which includes favorites like Cam Smith, Justin Thomas, and Xander Schauffele, as well as several standout players seeking their first major. It’s time to have a look at at the best matchups to bet on along with their US Open Odds.

  • When: June 16-19
  • Field: 156
  • Defending Champion: Jon Rahm

U.S. Open Betting Outright Odds

  • Rory McIlroy +1000
  • Justin Thomas +1200
  • Jon Rahm +1500
  • Scottie Scheffler +1500
  • Cam Smith +2100
  • Xander Schauffele +2200
  • Patrick Cantlay +2400
  • Jordan Spieth +2500

It’s hard to bet against McIlroy right now, given how well he played last weekend and how motivated he is to be the face of the PGA Tour. Thomas, however, played some of his best golf of the season at the RBC Canadian Open and should be in contention this weekend.

Spieth and Cantlay are interesting selections at +2400 and +2500, respectively, as both players usually perform well at majors and are due for a strong performance.

Looking further down the list for potentially big payouts, Corey Connors (+5000), Harold Varner III (+7000), and Keegan Bradley (+8000) are all attractive bets. Bradley, a hometown favorite, grew up 30 miles outside The Country Club.

1st Round 18 Hole Match-Ups Picks

  • Rory McIlroy (-125) vs. Jon Rahm (-110)

While McIlroy is the favorite to win the tournament, he historically has poor starts in major championships with the exception of his first-round 65 at the PGA Championship in May. He shot 73 in the first round of the Masters and THE PLAYERS Championship.

Rahm, meanwhile, will be motivated to turn his season around after disappointing finishes in the last two majors. He should have the better opening round.

  • Cam Smith (-120) vs. Sam Burns (+100)

Cam Smith has been a popular pick at major championships in the last two years. The world No. 6 battled to a T-13 at the PGA Championship and was T-3 at the Masters. However, he’s coming off a first-round 76 at the RBC Canadian Open and might be hitting a mid-season slump.

Burns, however, is having a breakout season and could put himself into the same category as the top players on tour with a good performance at the U.S. Open. He shot in the 60s all four rounds at the RBC Canadian Open and hasn’t been over 72 in his last 13 rounds.

1st Round 3 Balls

  • Joaquin Niemann (+170)/Cameron Young (+190)/Wil Zalatoris (+160)

Three-ball bets are tricky, but Will Zalatoris seems like the appropriate bet here. He’s been on the cusp of contending at a major for the past two years and should have a solid opening round.

  • Sungjae Im (+130)/Mito Pereira (+160)/Erik van Rooyen (+260)

Mito Pereira had a breakthrough performance at the PGA Championship before his heartbreaking collapse on 18. It’s likely that was an aberration and not the start of a breakout season for the Chilean golfer. Sungjae Im always gets up for majors and the U.S. Open should be no different.
