If there are no scratches, which horses project as frontrunners, pressers, and closers?

If there are no changes to the list, the lone front runner should be We the People, which explains why the Rodolphe Brissett trained horse offers low +350 odds. If We the People gets an easy lead, his breeding suggests he can wire the field.

Nest, Golden Glider, Creative Minister, and Howling Time should be in the second tier. None of the three will challenge We the People up front, but they will be closest to the speedster as they turn for home.

The closers are likely to be Mo Donegal, Rich Strike, Skippylongstocking, Ethereal Road, and Barber Road. Unless the pace is lightning fast, none of the top closers in the field should challenge We the People.  

What horse will be in the best position to catch the front runners as they turn for home?

Like what’s above, Nest, Golden Glider, Creative Minister, and Howling Time should be in the best position to catch the front runner should We the People get an easy lead. 

But being in the best position doesn’t mean, those four will have the best chance to catch the likely lone speed. Rich Strike is as talented as any horse in this race. 

The Derby winner broke his maiden by running much closer to the pace than his current style. So he should be able to stay close if jokey Sonny Leon want him to stay close. If not, he still has a breathtaking turn of foot, which means if Leon starts the run early, he’ll be closer to We the People at the top of the stretch than many believe.

Mo Donegal may try different tactics in this race. So like Rich Strike, the Todd Pletcher horse could be much closer than many believe. 

Which horse will go off the favorite on race day?

Beyer Speed Figure handicappers will jump all over We the People. Horses with stamina are difficult to run down once they get an easy lead. 

We the People should have no problem getting the distance. So if he gets the lead, he’ll coast to a front running score. At least, that’s what the Beyer horseplayers will believe. 

So We the People will go off the chalk. The second choice should be Mo Donegal while the third choice will be Rich Strike and the fourth choice will be Nest or Creative Minister. 

Name the top chalk and top underdog based on current information. 

There’s no way to tell if any of the entrants will try and test We the People early. Because we don’t know, we must make the Brissett trainee the top chalk. Speed is the name of the game and the pace suggests We the People, the fastest horse in the race, gets an easy lead and coasts.

The top underdog play is Skippylongstocking. The Saffie Joseph Jr. runner can stay closer to the pace than what he showed in the Derby and in the Preakness. If he’s in the second flight, 2 to 3 lengths off We the People, Skippy has the talent to challenge the front runner.

But if he’s way off the pace, like what he showed in the Kentucky Derby, forget it. He’s got no shot. So think about where you think Skippy will be as soon as they break from the gate before dumping on him to upset the favorites.
