Top Pick: We the People +200

Based on early weather reports, We the People will get a wet track like what he ran over when winning the Peter Pan.

That’s bad news for anybody looking to beat the morning line favorite. We the People has the breeding to easily handle the 1 ½ mile distance. He’s already shown he can win a race at Belmont, and he’s the fastest horse in this group.

Unless someone goes with We the People early, everyone else will be running for second, which makes the morning line chalk the top play.

Second Pick: Rich Strike +350

For sure, We the People will be tough to run down. But if any three-year-old can do it, it’s Rich Strike. Check out why the Derby winner can pull off the upset win.

First, Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby. Although most blame the pace and, yes, that had something to do with it, Rich still had to maneuver through traffic, get to the rail and then run fast enough to get past two quality horses, Zandon and Epicenter.

Second, Rich Strike broke his maiden running much closer to the pace than many realize. He was practically on the lead. So although he’s a closer now, it doesn’t mean he can’t stay closer if he wants.

So, yes, the roses winner can upset the chalk. Again, it’s going to take a gargantuan effort, but Rich Strike can do it.

Third Pick: Nest +800

Nest’s trainer, Todd Pletcher, saddled Rags to Riches to an upset Belmont Stakes win over hall of fame equine Curlin. What’s interesting is that Nest’s sire is none other than Curlin. Horse racing is funny that way.

Sure, this filly underperformed in the Kentucky Oaks, but all the other fillies did as well save for the winner, Secret Oath. We shouldn’t look past the fact Nest finished second.

We also shouldn’t look past the fact that in Saturday’s Belmont, Nest will be one of the closest to We the People. She’ll get first crack at the morning line chalk.

Sometimes, it takes a 3-year-old filly to get it going. If Nest improves at all, she’ll have a shot to overtake We the People and pull off the upset win.
