Gulfstream Park Picks for Saturday, May 9

Race 8 – 3:57 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $16,000 Claiming

Back in 2018, Reservenotattained broke its maiden like a stakes caliber runner. But in its first race back, the Shanghai Bobby sired gelding failed big time. A few things to note. First, that race was on the turf at 5-furlongs. Second, Reservenotattained gets blinkers for the second off the long layoff. And finally Luis Saez hops aboard. This 8/1 morning line shot has a big chance.

Assertiko drops in class from $50,000 optional claiming. Blinkers go back on and this one has a win and second from 4 races over Gulfstream’s dirt. The gelded son of Bahamian Squall should get the perfect trip behind the speed.

One of those speed horses is 7/5 chalk Louie’s Kingdom. Jockey Irad Ortiz rides for the Larry Rivelli trainee. Kingdom has a big shot to win. But if the morning line odds are 7/5, what price will we get right before the gates open?

  • Win: Reservenotattained
  • Place: Assertiko
  • Show: Louie’s Kingdom

Race 11 – 5:31 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt –$16,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

This is an optional claiming event with a purse of $41,000. That’s why the Todd Pletcher trained I’ll Fight Dempsey shows up to run in this. The Into Mischief sired 3-year-old colt ran awesome in his first against winners. Dempsey finished fourth in a $75,000 optional claimer. He should roll to an easy win here.

Trainer Georgina Baxter puts the saddle on 4/1 on the morning line R Mercedes Boy. The Overdriven 4-year-old gelding has a 3-2-1 record from 9 starts. He won’t add much to the exacta, but we can’t chase prices in every race.

Cryogenic appears better on turf. We don’t like to argue with good trainers like Mike Maker, though. Also, this one has a win and 2 thirds from 5 races over the Gulf dirt. We’ll give the 5-year-old horse a shot to fill out the trifecta.

  • Win: I’ll Flight Dempsey
  • Place: R Mercedes Boy
  • Show: Cryogenic

Race 12 – 6:02 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $8,000 Starter Optional Claiming

8/1 on the morning line Starship Apollo has a big shot to win this deep low-level optional claiming event. The 7-year-ol gelding sired by First Dude is in decent form with a win, a third, a second, and a fourth in its last 4 races. Luis Saez’s presence helps while Murat Sancal wins 21% second after the claim.

Dexter Road is another 8/1 morning line shot with a chance. A winner of $177,653, Dexter is an old-school horse warrior. The 6-year-old gelding has 9 wins, 6 seconds, and 7 thirds from 48 races. Dexter Road has finished second in his last couple. He can make it three straight place finishes on Saturday.

Monica Mgoey saddles The Queen’s Jules. The 5-year-old gelding has done its best work on the lawn. It drops in class, though, and the last time it ran over the turf, Jules waltzed to a 3 ½ length win.

  • Win: Starship Apollo
  • Place: Dexter Road
  • Show: The Queen’s Jules
