With the second leg of the annual Triple Crown chase taking place this weekend, horse racing bettors everywhere are looking to gather as much information as possible while finalizing their betting plans. If you’re among the bettors that are looking for a thoroughbred that could not only contend, but upset some of the bigger favorites in the 2017 Preakness Stakes, then Gunnevera may just be that horse.
According to Kelly, Gunnevera is primed for a spectacular performance this weekend.“He is feeling really good. His energy level is really high,” said Kelly. “He’s got a phenomenal kick, and we just haven’t had a chance to really prove it or show it. If he fires, he’ll join them up there [near the lead] and then, let the chips fall where they may.”Two-time Eclipse Award winning Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will replace four-time winner Javier Castellano who has chosen another horse for the second leg of the Triple Crown. Castellano finished seventh aboard Gunnevera in the Kentucky Derby while Smith rode Girvin to a 13th-place finish. For the Preakness Stakes, Castellano, who rides a number of horses for New York-based trainer Chad Brown, will be aboard Cloud Computing this coming weekend.Alex Sano, who assists his trainer-father Antonio Sano with Gunnevera, says they understand Castellano’s loyalty to Brown, but they’re happy to have Smith commit to Gunnevera, a horse he’s never ridden. Kelly says Smith is as good as any rider at knowing when to make race-altering moves.“I don’t think we could go to anybody who’s better at judging pace,” Kelly said.

Unfortunately, Gunnevera finished a distant seventh in the Kentucky Derby after finishing third in his previous race in the Florida Derby. Still, one person associated with Gunnevera believes he will have a decent shot at the Preakness – if he gets the speedy pace he’s looking for.“You have the old analogy, the hare and the tortoise,” said Larry Kelly, a former trainer who drove Gunnevera to Baltimore and has been advising his camp. “Obviously, we come from behind and obviously, Todd’s horse is extremely talented. We need a pace, no doubt about it. We need some action on the front end. With an honest pace and without a wide trip, I’d like to have a good, honest run at him.”
