Top Horse Racing Picks for Will Rogers Downs

Race 3 – 3:15 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – Allowance $29,000

3/1 morning line choice Man U is this race’s horse for the course. The Silver Haze 6-year-old gelding has 2 wins and 2 seconds from 5 races at Will Rogers Downs. Man U has won 3 times from 5 races at the distance with a second and third. Put some money on the nose and make the gelding the key horse in your exotics.

Burnt Joe is the speed of the speed. The James Hale charge takes a major step up in class. But this is Will Rogers Downs. Horses are much closer in terms of talent at Will Rogers than they are at tracks like Santa Anita. A $29,000 allowance isn’t always a $29,000 allowance over the dirt at WRD. If nobody goes with Joe, gate-to-wire is a real possibility.

At a 4/1 morning line Horse Racing Odds , Dance Doctor might be the overlay play. The 5-year-old gelding has a decent 6 wins, 6 seconds, and 2 thirds from 26-lifetime races. This guy has back class and heads into this off a third in a race at Fonner in its last. Not without a shot.

  • Win: Man U
  • Place: Burnt Joe
  • Show: Dance Doctor

Race 5 – 4:15 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – Handicap $17,050

We should count ourselves lucky if United Patriot holds the 2/1 morning line odds. Sired by Flat Out, the roan cost $155,000 at the 2017 Bessemer 2-Year-Old Sale. More was expected of United Patriot than running in handicaps at Will Rogers Downs. What’s strange is that the form and record are great. They’ve just never tried this one at better tracks. Patriot should handle these, no problem.

Memory Bank is 4/1 on the morning line, runs for Arlington Park and Fair Grounds conditioner Steve Manley, and raced in a $50K stakes and a $75K stakes in its last 2. The 6-year-old gelding could dominate if the class relief kicks into gear. Don’t discount for the win money.

9/5 chalk Stephen’s Answer races for top U.S. conditioner Robertino Diodoro. The trainer has 5 wins, a second, and a third from 7 runners at the meet. Diodoro routinely wins races at the biggest tracks in the nation. That’s why Stephen’s Answer goes off the chalk. It’s also why we won’t get value. Use on the bottom of exotics, but this one might not be worth a win bet at the expected odds.

  • Win: United Patriots
  • Place: Memory Bank
  • Show: Stephen’s Answer

Race 8 – 5:45 pm ET – 5 ½ Furlongs Dirt – Allowance $25,080

Sometimes, it does no good to go against chalk. Sweet Mary M is 8/5 on the morning line Horse Racing Odds . The Alternation sired 3-year-old filly should get the lead and runoff for an easy score. Trainer Kari Craddock drops the chalk from a $50K optional claimer at Sam Houston.

In her last race, Shanghai Sally lost by 23 lengths. Ah, but that event was on the grass. She’s much better on the dirt. If Sweet Mary M doesn’t go gate-to-wire, Sally figures to get the win money. Consider if you’re not sold on the chalk.

Euytchia has a single win from 19 races. Not that it matters for our purposes. We want her to make her usual closing run to get third. She has finished in the money a total of 10 times. Not bad and this allowance is light on talent.

  • Win: Sweet Mary M
  • Place: Shanghai Sally
  • Show: Euytchia
