Expert MLB Betting Preview for Tuesday: Mariners vs Angels

Written by on July 10, 2018

At 57-34, the Seattle Mariners would be leading every other division in baseball but their own and the AL East. Unfortunately, they are stuck in the AL West and can’t gain ground on red-hot Houston. The M’s open a series at the Angels on Tuesday night as solid MLB betting underdogs.

Arizona vs Colorado Game Preview, MLB Spread & Pick

Why Bet on Seattle?

The Mariners avoided a home sweep at the hands of the Rockies on Sunday, winning the final 6-4. Dee Gordon (hip) returned to the lineup with a single, a double and a run scored across four at-bats Sunday. Gordon was absent from the lineup Saturday after tweaking his hip and back in Friday’s interleague series opener. He didn’t show any ill effects of the ailment on Sunday, especially on his double off of Jake McGee in the seventh inning.Shortstop Jean Segura has 36 multi-hit games this season, tied for 2nd-most in the majors. Segura leads the Majors with 15 games of at least 3 hits. Segura has more multi-hit games (36) than games without a hit this season (21). Yet, Segura wasn’t named an All-Star, although he is among the Final Five fan vote candidates.Edwin Diaz struck out the side in a perfect 19-pitch ninth inning Sunday. Diaz had struck out the side in each of his past two outings, and he has logged 78 strikeouts over his 47 innings with just two homers allowed and 13 walks. He has converted 16 consecutive saves since his last blown opportunity on June 1. Diaz has worked five perfect innings over his past five appearances with 10 strikeouts. It’s Mike Leake on the mound and he’s been one of the most profitable pitchers in the majors this year. Leake (8-5, 4.11) earned the loss last Wednesday against the Angels, allowing four runs (three earned) in four innings. He gave up nine hits and a walk while striking out four. Leake pitched a clean first inning but struggled in every inning after that, allowing one run in the second, two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth before being removed from the game.Leake has faced the Halos three times this season overall. He is 1-2 with a 4.11 ERA in the three games, all at Safeco Field.

Why Bet on LA Angels?

The Angels took two of three over the weekend against the previously red-hot Dodgers. In Sunday’s 4-3 victory, Shohei Ohtani made his presence felt in a big way, blasting a pinch-hit go-ahead solo homer in the seventh inning. Ohtani had fouled a ball off of his right knee during the ninth inning of Saturday’s game, but showed no ill-effects, crushing a JT Chargois offering an estimated 443 feet. He had been just 2-for-16 (.125) with eight strikeouts since returning from the disabled list prior to his game-changing blast. Ohtani is now hitting .275/.354/.519 with seven homers and 21 RBI on the season.Albert Pujols also went deep for the Angels on Sunday, tying the score at 3 in the sixth. Justin Upton had a two-run single. Justin Anderson allowed a single in the ninth but got Cody Bellinger to ground into a game-ending double play for his fourth save.Angels come in as MLB Betting favorites against Mariners Tuesday Night.Mike Trout has now been walked intentionally 16 times this season, ninth-most before the All-Star break in American League history. John Olerud had the most in the AL with 22 in 1993. Trout ranks in Top 4 in MLB in several offensive categories. Trout has more games reaching base 4+ times (13) than games he hasn’t at all (12). Since his call-up in 2012, Trout has never gone more than two consecutive games without reaching base.Garrett Richards (5-4, 3.42) struck out eight batters in 5.1 innings Wednesday against the Mariners, earning a win after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk. It was Richards’ first start back from a hamstring injury. He allowed back-to-back homers to Kyle Seager and Ryon Healy in the second inning. In 21 career games (13 starts) against the Mariners, Richards is 7-4 with a 3.06 ERA (94 IP – 32 ER) and 90 strikeouts. In three starts this season, he is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA (14 IP – 4 ER).
