Last year when he pitched in Toronto, Canadian lefty James Paxton no-hit the Blue Jays while with the Seattle Mariners. In Wednesday’s nationally televised matchup from Yankee Stadium, Paxton faces the Jays again as the teams close out a series. The Yankees are favorites at the latest MLB odds, let’s take a look while making some predictions.

White Sox vs Red Sox MLB Odds, Preview & Expert Pick

Why Bet on Toronto?

The Blue Jays won two of three games in their only other series against the Yankees this year (June 4-6 at Rogers Centre). They went 6-13 against New York last season, including a 3-7 record in the Bronx.

Freddy Galvis hit his second career grand slam Monday against the Yankees. It was his 12th homer of the year. Galvis didn’t hit much at all from mid-April through mid-June, but he’s batting .404 with three homers and 13 RBI in his last 12 games.

The Jays remain without first baseman Justin Smoak. He’s on the injured list with a quad injury and his return is TBA. Smoak is hitting .240/.383/.475 with 27 runs scored, 12 homers and 33 RBI across 222 plate appearances.

Left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has made a seamless transition to the outfield after starting his career as a second baseman. Gurriel has racked up five outfield assists while impressing the coaching staff and teammates alike with his outfield play.

Meanwhile, Gurriel has somewhat on a tear at the plate as well. Since being recalled from Triple-A on May 24, he’s raked at a .330/.372/.679 clip with 10 homers, seven doubles, and a triple. He has slugged .664 since re-joining the club, which ranks 2nd among AL batters over the last month, while his 1.034 OPS ranks 4th and his .327 AVG is 5th.

The Blue Jays’ Trent Thornton (2-5) was solid in his last start, striking out seven and holding the Red Sox to two runs on eight hits on Friday in a no-decision. Thornton surrendered a run in the third and another in the seventh before departing with a three-run lead. Unfortunately, his team couldn’t hold on for the victory. The 25-year-old right-hander has now turned in back-to-back quality starts, and he sits with a 4.25 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 87:38 K:BB over 82.2 innings.

The 25-year-old has a 2.96 ERA on the road this season, compared to a 6.39 mark at home.

Why Bet on NY Yankees?

Aroldis Chapman recorded his 22nd save despite giving up an unearned run Monday against the Blue Jays. Chapman showed perhaps his best velocity of the year. He’s gone 17 straight outings without allowing an earned run, though he has given up unearned runs three times during that span.

The Yankees have not been shut out in 161 consecutive games, the Majors’ longest in the last 18 seasons (since 2002). That is tied with Texas (first 160G of 2001) for the sixth-longest stretch without being shut out in the Modern Era (since 1900). The last longer streak was Cincinnati’s 208-game streak from 4/3/00-5/23/01. The Yanks have scored double-digit runs 20 times during the streak.

Blue Jays vs Yankees is going to be a good one.

The Yanks have had 20 players hit at least one homer this year, tied with the Mets for the most in the majors. Since 2001, it’s only the fourth time they have had at least 20 players homer in one season (23 in 2013, 20 in 2014, 20 in 2006).

New York’s James Paxton (5-3) earned the win after allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out seven over five innings Friday night against the Astros. Paxton turned in a stellar showing, with his lone run allowed coming in the fourth inning on an RBI double to right field. He fired 60 of 100 pitches for strikes on the night, inducing five groundouts compared to three flyouts.

The 30-year-old lefty has looked sharp in each of his last two outings, combining to permit three runs and 13 hits over 11 innings (2.45 ERA). He has walked four against 14 strikeouts in those outings. Paxton allowed four runs over 4 2/3 innings vs. the Blue Jays on June 5 in Toronto.
