The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets probably are the two best teams in the NL East Division when fully healthy, but neither are close to that at the moment. They open a three-game series at Citi Field – Atlanta’s first trip of 2021 to Queens – on Friday with the Braves favored on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on Atlanta? | Betting Odds for MLB
Atlanta was off Thursday and thus will have its full bullpen available. The Braves split two games in Boston to open this week, dropping the finale 9-5 on Wednesday. Austin Riley hit his 10th homer and walked in the loss. Seven of those homers have come in his last 10 games. Riley will serve as the Braves’ cleanup hitter with Marcell Ozuna sidelined.
Ozuna is expected to be sidelined for at least the next six weeks with fractures in his ring and middle fingers. Ozuna injured both the ring and middle fingers on his left hand while sliding into third base on Tuesday night in Boston. Atlanta had re-signed him to a $65 million extension this offseason.
It’s young right-hander Ian Anderson on the mound. Anderson (4-1) shut out the Pirates for six innings last Friday in the easiest win of his young career. The Braves gave Anderson five runs to work with in the first two innings, and it was 10-0 when he left after six. Perhaps a little more at ease with the big lead, Anderson didn’t walk a batter for the first time in nine starts this year. The right-hander delivered his third straight quality start and fifth of the season, and he’ll take a 2.82 ERA and 53:21 K:BB through 51 innings into Friday.
In Anderson’s 19 career starts in the majors, he has not allowed more than 4 earned runs per game in a start, giving him a career ERA of 2.48, and an ERA+ of 154 (the average ERA+ for all MLB starters is 100). Anderson relies heavily on three pitches: the 4-seam fastball, curveball, and changeup, the latter of which is his best pitch. Batters are hitting just .145 against Anderson’s changeup this season, which ranks as one of the lowest averages in all of baseball.
This is Anderson’s first look at the Mets in 2021. Last year, he faced them jus once and lost, allowing three runs and four hits in 4.2 innings. That is his only outing against them.
Why Bet on NY Mets? | Betting Odds for MLB
The Mets had to play a makeup doubleheader at home vs. Colorado on Thursday and thus could be very short-handed in the bullpen for Friday.New York got more bad news this week when former All-Star right-hander Noah Syndergaard, who missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery, left his second minor-league rehab start Tuesday after just one inning with soreness in that surgically-repaired elbow. His first pitch Tuesday was a four-seam fastball that registered 95.3 mph, but then his velocity dipped into the mid-80s. Syndergaard has been shut down for six weeks, which means he won’t even pick up a ball again until around the All-Star break. His Mets career may be over.
Right-hander Carlos Carrasco, who was acquired in the offseason in the Francisco Lindor trade with Cleveland, has been sidelined since spring training after tearing his right hamstring. He isn’t expected back before late-June or early-July. More than half of New York’s everyday lineup is on the injured list as well. Yet the team is still favored to win the NL East.
With two starting outfielders on IL, the team recently called up outfielder Johneshwy Fargas, but now he’s on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left shoulder. New York was hoping to avoid the IL given their fragile roster situation, but MRI results confirmed the initial diagnosis of an AC joint sprain. Fargas has been replaced on the active roster by Billy McKinney, who was acquired late Tuesday by the Mets in a trade with Milwaukee.
The Mets have used 41 players through 41 games this season. The team used a total of 47 players in 2020. The franchise record for most players used in a season is 56 by the 2018 Mets. New York is 17-4 when scoring four or more runs this season and 6-16 when scoring three or fewer runs. The Mets are 19-5 when scoring first this season.
It’s believed that Taijuan Walker (3-1) will be activated off the injured list and start Friday. The 28-year-old right-hander was removed from his most start against the Braves on May 17 due to discomfort along his left side and landed on the 10-day IL. He’s eligible to be activated Friday and apparently doesn’t need a rehab start. Walker has registered a 2.05 ERA through eight starts this season.
