Why Bet on Colorado?

The Rockies are fourth in the National League West and 6 1/2 games out of the Wild Card, but they enter the second half having gone 12-8 over their last 20. General manager Bill Schmidt is offering the team every chance to play its way back into the race and justify not trading away talent.

The Rox got a key reliever back ahead of the break when Alex Colomé threw a scoreless inning on Saturday against the Pirates. Colomé missed a couple contests last week due to a relatively minor hamstring issue. The 33-year-old veteran reliever carries a strong 2.86 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 25/11 K/BB ratio across 34 2/3 innings (36 appearances) into the second half.

First baseman CJ Cron was named to the NL All-Star team. He ranks among National League leaders in average (.298), home runs (21), RBI (69), slugging (.552), OPS (.902) and hits (103). He became the eighth Rockies player ever with at least 100 hits, 21 home runs and 69 RBI prior to the All-Star Break and the first since Todd Helton and Preston Wilson in 2003. Cron came in to play first in the seventh inning of the ASG. He got his lone at-bat in the eighth against Yankees closer Clay Holmes and grounded into a fielder’s choice.

It’s Antonio Senzatela (3-5, 4.95 ERA) on the mound Friday as he will be activated from the injured list from a shoulder injury. Senzatela initially appeared on track to make his return from the IL for Colorado’s final game before the All-Star break last weekend against the Pirates, but the Rockies ultimately decided he was better off getting some additional recovery time. The right-hander built up to five innings in his rehab start July 12 with Triple-A Albuquerque, so he’s not expected to face any limitations.

It marked the second time this season that the 27-year-old right-hander landed on the injured list, following a stint in May that involved a lower back strain. He also dealt with a hamstring strain in spring training that slowed his progress, although he did break camp with the team and make the Opening Day roster.

It was Williams’ first appearance in the ASG. Williams is unscored upon in his last 26 regular-season outings (24.2ip). Opponents are batting .099 (8-for-81, 8bb, 40k) during this stretch.

Fellow reliever Hoby Milner has a 0.74 ERA in his last 25 appearances (24.1ip, 2er) and is unscored upon in his last 5 outings (5.1ip), lowering his season ERA to 1.98. Milner has stranded 16 of 18 inherited runners this season. Closer Josh Hader skipped the All-Star Game to spend the time with his wife, Maria, who on June 15 gave birth to the couple’s first child, Lucas Alexander, following a difficult pregnancy.

It’s 2021 NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes on the mound – he decided not to play in the All-Star Game to ready his arm for the second half of the season. Burnes (7-4) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out 10 in 7.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants last Thursday.

Since a pair of bad starts to begin June (six earned runs over eight frames), Burnes has bounced back by allowing only eight runs (seven earned) over his last 41 innings. The right-hander has racked up three double-digit strikeout games in that span and has seven such starts this year. He’s pitched to a dominant 2.14 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 144:27 K:BB across 113.2 innings overall.
