Why Bet on Milwaukee?

While the Brewers are atop the NL Central, they are in a bit of a funk having lost four of five and lost a series at terrible Cincinnati on Wednesday with a 14-11 football-score loss.

There was history made in that one as the Brewers’ Christian Yelich joined an exclusive club by hitting for the third cycle of his career. Yelich tripled in the top of the ninth inning to complete it after hitting a ground-rule double in the top of the first, a home run in the top of the third and a single in the top of the fifth. He finished the game 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Yelich’s three cycles tie him with five other players for the MLB lead. Trea Turner was the most recent player to accomplish the feat, doing so on his birthday last season when he was with the Nationals. The others with three are Adrian Beltre, Bob Meusel and Babe Herman.

All three of Yelich’s cycles have come against the Reds, who have allowed 20 cycles in their history, second most to the St. Louis Cardinals (24) all time. Yelich, 30, is the first player to hit three cycles against a single team. He had previously hit one on Aug. 29, 2018 and Sept. 17, 2018.

Yelich is now hitting .259/.356/.482 with five homers and three steals in a depressed offensive environment. By wRC+, which accounts for league production, Yelich’s current 138 mark would be the third-highest of his career. Hunter Renfroe blasted a pair of solo home runs in Wednesday’s loss. Renfroe is now hitting .227/.265/.491 with eight homers and 13 RBI on the season.

Through 12 appearances this season, closer Josh Hader is 12-for-12 in save opportunities and has not allowed a run (11.1ip). Opponents are 2-for-37 (.054) with 5 walks and 18 strikeouts.

It’s reigning NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes (1-2) on the mound Friday. Burnes suffered another tough-luck loss last Saturday, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits over six frames against the Braves. He had seven strikeouts and one walk. He served up a solo home run to Ronald Acuna Jr. in the fifth inning and then an RBI single to Ozzie Albies after Marcell Ozuna had advanced on an error in the sixth. Burnes generated 20 swinging strikes in the ballgame — nine of those on his cutter — while posting a CSW of 35 percent. He is 1-2 despite a stellar 1.86 ERA and 0.80 WHIP. The Brewers have scored just 17 runs in his 6 starts this season (2.8rpg).

Burnes is 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA in 3 career games/1 start against the Marlins (7.2ip, 5er). He took an 8-0 loss last season on April 26 at American Family Field.

The Marlins finished a seven-game West Coast trip at 2-5 with an 11-3 win at Arizona on Wednesday. Miami led that 3-1 entering the bottom of the eighth so a bummer for those betting under the total of 8 runs. Avisail Garcia ripped a three-run home run and reached base three times in the win. Garcia put the cherry on top of the Marlins’ eight-run ninth inning, launching one 440 feet off of J.B. Wendleken for his second long ball of the season.

Jazz Chisholm also had a three-run shot in the ninth inning. Chisholm has registered at least one hit in 12 of his last 13 games, compiling five extra-base hits and nine RBI over that stretch. His season slash line now sits at .295/.337/.611 over 95 at-bats, all which represent career bests.

Joey Wendle was removed from Wednesday’s game due to renewed tightness in his right hamstring. Wendle missed three games last week due to the same injury. He made his mark on this game before exiting, going 2-for-2 with a two-run homer to give the Marlins an early lead. Shortstop Miguel Rojas was removed from the game due to dehydration. Rojas went 1-for-4 before being pulled for a pinch hitter during the ninth inning.

It’s Pablo Lopez (4-1, 1.00) on the mound Friday. Lopez was great in last Saturday’s victory over the Padres, striking out five over eight innings of scoreless baseball. The right-hander scattered five hits on the night and issued a pair of walks. He generated just seven swinging strikes on his 97 pitches in the contest and posted an underwhelming CSW of only 24 percent but was able to keep the Padres hitters off-balance all night and induced plenty of weak contact. His 1.00 ERA is second lowest in club history for a starting pitcher through his first six starts of a season.

Miami’s last seven losses have all come by one run, the longest such streak in club history. The Marlins lead MLB in one-run losses with 10. They also are the only team in the Major Leagues this year that have 16-or-more stolen bases and 7-or-more triples.
