Written by on March 23, 2021

The opening day of the baseball season is now just a little over a week away, with teams winding down their spring season and heading home in the next couple of days. After a heavily shortened and disrupted season on 2020, the hope is that we can get back to normal and get a full season that is not hampered by COVID. That is something that is going to require us all adopting a wait and see attitude, but what we can talk about right now is the latest news and rumors coming out of MLB. Let’s get right to that so you can get ready to make your bets against their MLB odds.

Latest MLB 2021 Betting News & Rumors Mar. 23rd Edition

A new season is a new opportunity for players to bounce back from what may have been perceived as a poor showing in the previous year. One player who is determined to do that this season is J.D. Martinez of the Boston Red Sox. Martinez ended last season with a .213 batting average, a big drop from the .304 number he posted in 2019. He has made it clear, though, that he is not pleased at being judged on what was a very short season last year, and while the spring season has not been great for Martinez, he does seem determined to leave his mark on the upcoming season.

Fans love to see who will get the start for their team on opening day, but there are situations where the manager seems to forget to tell the player who that will be. That was the case in Philadelphia, where we all expected Aaron Nola to be handed the ball for the first start of the season, especially since he has been the man in each of the last 3 seasons. Word is that Nola will indeed get the start, although he admitted that Joe Girardi did not actually inform him of the fact, with the manager believing that Nola’s schedule in the Grapefruit League would speak for itself.

As far as pitching goes, things are even murkier in Milwaukee, with Brewers manager Craig Counsell yet to name his #5 starter. We already know that Brandon Woodruff and Corbin Barnes will get the first two starts of the season, but the biggest question mark comes at the #5 spot. It will be either Josh Lindblom or Freddy Peralta who will be added to the starting roster, although Counsell further muddied the waters by suggesting that both pitchers will have seen starts by the time the month of April comes to an end.

Another starter announcement that is not totally surprising is that Max Scherzer will be getting the ball for the Washington Nationals in what will be his 6th time as an opening day starter while a member of the Nationals. There was some speculation that Stephen Strasburg might get the job, but he is still dealing with a slight calf strain. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see when Strasburg gets his first start of the new season.
