It’s a preview of a potential Eastern Conference playoff matchup on Wednesday when the Atlanta Hawks visit the Philadelphia 76ers. Philly, which is battling for the top seed in the East, is a solid favorite on the NBA odds because of some Atlanta injuries.

They have met only once – they do again Friday in Philadelphia – and the Hawks prevailed 112-94 at home on Jan. 11. Trae Young scored 26 points to lead Atlanta. Young’s spurt keyed Atlanta’s 15-2 run to open the half. The Hawks stretched a 65-50 halftime advantage to an 80-52 lead with the run. Atlanta led 95-65 late in the third before Young and other starters sat out the final period. Joel Embiid led Philadelphia with 24 points and 11 rebounds. The Sixers were without numerous players due to injury/COVID protocols, including Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris and Seth Curry.
Why Bet on Atlanta? | NBA Betting AnalysisDown star Trae Young and few other key guys, the Hawks were upset 100-86 in Detroit on Monday. Atlanta shot just 39% from the field and 4 of 27 from 3-point range. It was their lowest-scoring game of the season.
“They started with pressure and continued with that pressure for 48 minutes,” Atlanta coach Nate McMillan said. “I don’t think it was our players’ letdown. … I thought Detroit just played aggressive, physical basketball on the defensive end of the floor.”
Kris Dunn made his first appearance of the season following right ankle surgery. Dunn, who signed with the Hawks in the offseason, went scoreless in 13:11. But Young (left ankle), De’Andre Hunter (right knee), Cam Reddish (right Achilles), Tony Snell (right ankle) and Lou Williams (illness) were all out.
Both Kevin Huerter and Brandon Goodwin left Monday’s game with injuries. Huerter left a left shoulder injury and didn’t return, finishing with 15 points and a 3-pointer in 27 minutes. Huerter missed 11 games with a rotator cuff injury on the same shoulder last season so he’s probably out a while. Goodwin’s Goodwin’s feet got tangled up in Monday’s contest, resulting in a brutal injury that forced him to leave the court in a wheelchair so he’s obviously out for a while.
Sixth man Lou Williams (illness) is expected to play Wednesday against the 76ers. General manager Travis Schlenk said that Williams, who missed Monday’s game due to flu-like symptoms, was feeling better on the team’s flight to Philadelphia. Williams could be looking at a fairly heavy workload since the team’s backcourt rotation is battered by injuries.
Atlanta is scoring 113.3 points per game, putting the Hawks on pace to post a top-five points per game mark for the fifth time since the club moved to Atlanta in 1968-69.
Why Bet on Philadelphia? | NBA Betting AnalysisThe Sixers got a few key players back on Monday and trashed Oklahoma City 121-90 to snap a four-game skid. The Sixers led 34-26 after the first quarter and never looked back, leading from wire to wire, and by as many as 37 points. Philly had an NBA-season high 22 steals. Tobias Harris had four. The Sixers’ 22 steals marked the team’s highest stealing total since Jan. 14, 1986.
All-Star Ben Simmons was originally listed as out again Monday but ended up playing after missing the past four. He hit 6-of-8 shots for 12 points, three rebounds, our assists, three steals and two blocks. Simmons only played 23 minutes due to the nature of the game, but he should be ready to handle his regular workload Wednesday.
“We missed him a ton,” said Sixers head coach Doc Rivers. “I was joking with another coach. He called me and said, ‘If anyone ever asks you about how important Ben is on offense, just show them the last four games.’” Also, they missed an elite wing defender, who’s a Defensive Player of the Year candidate on the other side of the ball.
Joel Embiid had 21 points and five rebounds and had to play just 23 minutes. Embiid’s shoulder injury sidelined him for just one game. It was a well-balanced offensive performance for the Sixers, which saw all 15 available players score. Eleven Sixers scored six points or more. Danny Green (left hip recovery) and Mike Scott (left hip soreness) were out.
While the Sixers have dropped behind the Nets for the top seed in the East, a favorable schedule the rest of the way means Philly still has a shot to secure home-court advantage throughout the conference playoffs if it can get healthy and play up to its capabilities. The Sixers hold the tiebreaker over the Nets.
“We want to be the No. 1 seed,” said Harris. “If we handle our business, I think we’ll be fine to get there.”
