New York and Los Angeles are the two biggest media markets in the United States, so of course Tuesday’s NBA matchup between the Knicks and Lakers is nationally televised. New York will be favored on the NBA odds unless L.A. superstar LeBron James returns – and he might.

On March 12 in New York, the Knicks beat the Lakers 111-96. New York All-Star Julius Randle had 34 points and 10 rebounds against his former team. Elfrid Payton scored 20 points and Derrick Rose added 14 off the bench for the Knicks. Dennis Schroder scored 21 points and Markieff Morris had 17 for the Lakers, who were without LeBron James and Anthony Davis. LA committed 25 turnovers in the loss, leading to 29 Knicks points.

Dating back to the Minneapolis era, this will be the 293rd meeting between the Lakers and Knicks and the 202nd since the Lakers moved to Los Angeles prior to the 1960-61 season. At Staples Center, the Lakers are 14-7 all-time against the Knicks.

The Knicks snapped a two-game skid with an impressive 106-100 win at the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, meaning New York didn’t have to travel ahead of this game. The Knicks’ defense once again rose to the occasion, limiting the best three-point shooting team in the NBA to just 34.3% from downtown.

Derrick Rose sank 11-of-17 shots in the win, scoring 25 points with eight assists and six rebounds.  Rookie Immanuel Quickley (sprained left ankle) was out for the second straight game, and the Knicks were also without Alec Burks due to a left knee bruise, so Rose’s efforts were essential in the victory. Rose has three 20-point performances in his last five outings and has hit 64.2 percent of his shots over that span. Since joining the Knicks, Rose has had six 20-point outings — all within the last 11 games — and has dished out five or more assists 13 times across 32 games.

Reggie Bullock had one of his best games this season with a season-high 24 points and turned it over just once in a whopping 46 minutes. Outside of a brief break at the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second, Bullock played the entire game. It was the first time Bullock had topped the 20-point mark since April 5 and the fifth time overall.

Star Julius Randle had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Randle hasn’t been as efficient with his shot, shooting just 39.7 percent from the floor over his last four games. RJ Barrett added 18 points but May has not been kind to Barrett as he’s shooting 38.3 percent from the floor.

It was a statement win for the Knicks, who needed to show they can compete with some of the best teams in the NBA. Beating the defending champion Lakers would put the ultimate exclamation point on what would be a 4-2 trip out west for the Knicks. A win also would have the Knicks feeling good about their chances of at least hanging onto either the fourth or fifth spot in the East — and, as a result, avoiding having to face any of the East’s top three seeds in the first round. –

LeBron James is hoping to return Tuesday but it’s the front of a back-to-back so the team might wait until Wednesday as LeBron recovers from a sprained ankle. James returned to the court on April 30 following a 20-game absence due to an ankle injury, but after playing in two games — the second of which he exited early — he went back on the injury list as he was dealing with soreness in the same ankle that caused him to miss significant time.

Coach Frank Vogel said the team, which is very close to locked into the seventh seed and the play-in tournament, might be more conservative with bringing back their star. There’s interest in getting James back before the regular season ends in a week, but there’s less of a rush now then there might have been when a sixth seed was more realistic.

“I think it really comes down to just evaluating where we’re at on a daily basis: where he’s at with how his ankle is feeling, and how his workouts are going, but also where the standings lie,” Vogel said. “Obviously if you get locked into seventh, maybe it does make some of those decisions easier and we’ll just focus on what’s best for his return to play program, so to speak.”

The Lakers played really well without LeBron on Sunday, upsetting the Phoenix Suns 123-110. Anthony Davis looked as good as he has looked all season — even better than he did before his right leg injuries. Davis notched 42 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, with three blocks and three steals, becoming the first player in franchise history with such a stat line. AD finished 13-of-27 from the field and 15-of-17 at the line to go with a game-high plus/minus rating of plus-26.

Kyle Kuzma sat Sunday with lower back tightness, which Vogel said sprung late against the Trail Blazers on Friday. Consider Kuzma questionable here. The fourth-year forward out of Utah has started in half of the 64 games he’s played in for the Lakers this year. Kuzma is averaging 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season while shooting 43.5% from the field and 35.7% from three.

Starting point guard Dennis Schroder remains in the COVID protocols. He’s not expected back Tuesday but should be at some point this week.
