Selection Sunday has come and gone, and we now know the 68 teams that are going to be taking part in March Madness. Of course, that number will quickly drop to 64, as we have the 4 play-in games to take care of before we get into the bracket proper. That gives you a couple of days to really think about your bracket and how you are going to play over the next few weeks. Instead of looking at the regional games, we are instead going to focus on those 4 play-in games in this piece. The drama begins on Tuesday, so let’s jump right into the action and get started with these 2019 March Madnees betting picks.

Top 2019 March Madness First Round Upset Betting Picks

Prairie View A&M Panthers vs Fairleigh Dickinson Knights

There really is little to separate these two teams, who will get the First Four rolling on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers come into this one on a particularly hot streak, winning each of their last 11 games, but the Knights are not that far off the pace, winning 8 in a row to end the season and get into this play-in game.

It is Fairleigh Dickinson who comes into this one as a slight 1 ½ point favorite, but I think that we might well be in for a mild upset here. Prairie View has won both games played in a neutral venue this season, which I think gives them the edge.

Temple Owls vs Belmont Bruins

In this one, we get to see the offensively gifted Belmont Bruins, who have the #2 offense in the nation, go against a Temple team that plays great defensive basketball. It is perhaps because they have such a great offense that the Bruins are in as a 3 ½ point favorite for this one.

Temple is going to be able to slow the Bruins down somewhat, but will it be enough for them to actually go out and get the win. I don’t believe so, as I like Belmont to win a close one. The bet that I like in this game, though, is UNDER 155 ½.

North Carolina Central Eagles vs North Dakota State Bison

Both of these teams finished the season with an identical 18-15 record, but it is the Bison who come into this play-in game as a 5 ½ point favorite. It’s a label under which they have thrived this season, going 14-5 SU when playing as a favorite. North Carolina Central can become a surprise in the 2019 March Madness.

On the negative side of things, North Dakota State has not been at their best when playing in neutral venues, going 1-3 SU. North Carolina has thrived on neutral courts, going 4-1 SU in those games, but they have been a very poor bet at an underdog, going just 3-12 SU in those games. The Eagles might just cover here, but I like the Bison to win.

St. John’s Red Storm vs Arizona State Sun Devils

If we are going to be totally honest here, the Red Storm somewhat backed into this play-in game after losing 4 of their last 5 games and 6 of their last 10. It’s certainly not the type of form that you want to be in ahead of your biggest games of the season.

The one thing that they do have in their favor is that they were good in neutral site games this season, going 4-1 SU. Arizona State is in as a modest 1-point favorite after going 6-2 SU in their final 8 games. Where they shone this season was as a favorite, going 16-4 SU in those games. I am on Arizona State to win.
