NFL 2021 Regular Season: San Francisco at Detroit Betting Analysis

Two teams coming off of terrible seasons in 2020 will meet up at Ford Field, as the Detroit Lions will host the San Francisco 49ers in their season opener on Sunday afternoon. While these two teams struggled last season, these two teams are predicted to be on opposite ends this season.

The main reason that the Niners struggled last season was because of injuries. Now that those players are back healthy, San Francisco is one of the favorites to win the NFC. Detroit on the other hand is predicted to be one of the worst teams in the league this season. With all that in mind, let’s have a look at both teams and how they arrive to this matchup so you can get ready to bet against their NFL odds.

NFL Betting Preview for 49ers vs Lions

San Francisco Preview

As we’ve already elaborated on, San Francisco should be much better this season. They lost so many key players to injuries last season and finished the season 6-10. Their defense was really hurt by key losses, and with those players back, their defense should be back to their status as one of the best defenses in the league. The Niners’ defensive line is one of the best lines in the game, and they can get to the quarterback. If Nick Bosa can stay healthy, this defense has the chance to be elite.

On the offensive side of the ball, the quarterback position could be in flux. Jimmy Garoppolo is the starter for now, but Trey Lance was drafted with the third pick in the draft. We’re not sure how long Kyle Shanahan will go with Jimmy G. The Niners have a very good rushing attack that will be led by Raheem Mostert and rookie Trey Sermon. George Kittle is one of the top tight ends in the game, and Brandon Aiyuk is a promising, young wide receiver. The Niners’ offense should be able to put up a lot of points this season.

Detroit Preview

The Detroit Lions offense will have a very different look this season, as Matthew Stafford will no longer be under center for the Lions. He was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in the offseason, and the Lions acquired former Rams starter Jared Goff in that deal. Goff will lead the Lions’ offense this season.

While Goff doesn’t have a whole lot of talented weapons at his disposal, new head coach Dan Campbell has made an emphasis on getting better upfront, and the Lions drafted offensive lineman Penei Sewell with their first pick.

Defensively, the Lions should be better than what they’re given credit for. They have a quality defensive front, made some upgrades to their linebacking crew in the offseason, and a young, up-and-coming secondary. We’ll see how well they play this season.

The Niners are a 7.5-point favorite in this one. While that’s a lot of points, we still think that the Niners will cover. San Francisco’s elite offense should be able to contain the Detroit offense. While Detroit’s defense isn’t as bad as everyone thinks, they’ll still struggle to stop San Francisco’s rushing attack. We think that San Francisco takes this one 24-14, and starts the season off on the right foot.
