How to Bet Saints vs Ravens NFL Week 7 Spread & Game Analysis

Written by on October 18, 2018

One of the marquee matchups of Week 7 of the NFL season is this one between the Saints and Ravens, both division leaders. It’s surely Drew Brees’ last-ever game in Baltimore and he’s on the precipice of throwing his 500th TD pass. However, his Saints are short football betting favorites.

Last Meeting

In 2014, the Saints lost at home to Baltimore 34-27. Justin Forsett rushed for a career-high 182 yards and two touchdowns for the Ravens – he’s out of the NFL now. Will Hill had a 44-yard interception return for a go-ahead score in the third quarter. Steve Smith caught four passes for 89 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown. Neither of those guys is around, either. Joe Flacco passed for 243 yards and a touchdown. Of course, he’s still Baltimore’s QB. Drew Brees passed for 420 yards and three touchdowns, and he’s still going strong.

Why Bet on New Orleans?

The Saints are off their bye, which in a way is too bad because they were playing their best football. On Monday night in Week 5, they torched the Redskins 43-19. Drew Brees passed for 363 yards and three touchdowns in the Saints’ Week 5 win. Brees has 72,103 career passing yards and surpassed Peyton Manning (71,940) in Week 5 to become the league’s all-time leading passer.

Tre’Quan Smith caught all three of his targets for 111 yards and two touchdowns. With Ted Ginn (knee) out, Smith saw an increased role and made the most of his three looks. He scored a 62-yard touchdown where he was literally wide open with no defender within 10 yards of him. It was the pass play that Brees became the NFL’s all-time passing yards leader. Mark Ingram rushed 16 times for 53 yards and two touchdowns in his season debut off suspension.

With a touchdown pass on Sunday, Brees can join Manning (539), Hall of Famer Brett Favre (508) and Tom Brady (501) as the only players in NFL history to throw 500 career touchdown passes.

The Saints’ Ginn (knee) remained sidelined at Wednesday’s practice this week. Ginn missed the Week 5 win over the Redskins before the bye and still isn’t ready. So Smith should see more action. Saints CB Marshon Lattimore (concussion) is practicing in full for Week 7 against the Ravens. Lattimore exited with a concussion in Week 5 but had the bye week to heal. The reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year will likely be tasked with covering Raven’s deep threat John Brown.

Why Bet on Baltimore?

In last week’s 21-0 win at Tennessee, the Ravens’ defense, led by linebacker Za’Darius Smith’s three sacks, recorded a franchise-record 11 sacks, becoming the third team since 2002 to record at least 11 sacks in a single game. They finished a sack off the NFL record for a game shared by five teams. Smith, a 2015 fourth-rounder, has already matched a career high with 5.5 sacks. He was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Dean Pees and the Titans simply couldn’t stop his old team as the Ravens outgained Tennessee 361-106 and punted only once against a defense led by their former defensive coordinator. Pees came out of a short retirement to join first-year head coach Mike Vrabel. The Ravens couldn’t have looked much better handing Tennessee its first shutout since Nov. 28, 2010.

Saints vs Ravens is going to be a battle.

Joe Flacco completed 25-of-37 passes for 238 yards, one touchdown, and one pick. Flacco wasn’t needed as the Ravens took a 14-0 lead into the half and never looked back. Alex Collins rushed 19 times for 54 yards and two scores.

Flacco has had 11 passes batted down in the first six games of the season, which are tied with Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins for most in the league. They’re the only ones with more than seven deflected passes at the line this year. Flacco has had at least two passes knocked down at the line in four of his six games including vs. the Titans. In Flacco’s previous 10 NFL seasons, he never has ranked higher than 16th in any year in deflected passes — mainly because he’s so tall.
