2022 Tata Open Maharashtra Open Info

The 2022 Tata Open Maharashtra is a 2022 ATP Tour tennis tournament played on the outdoor hard courts at Mhalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex in Pune, India. This year will mark the 26th edition of the tournament and the first in two years after it had to be canceled in 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.

Even this year, COVID will affect Tata Open Maharashtra, as there will be no fans allowed at the venue to cheer on their favorite players. Furthermore, all players will have to be double vaccinated to play. RT-PCR tests will be scheduled for every three days, while the players will have to take a Rapid Antigen test every day.

So while there will be rules in place to allow the tournament to play out safely, Tata Open Maharashtra is confirmed to occur. And we already know which are the top-eight seeded players.

Leading the way as the top-seeded player is world no. 15 Aslan Karatsev, followed by Lorenzo Musetti (no.60), Gianluca Mager (no.65), and Jiří Veselý (no.78) as the only remaining player who is ranked inside the top-80. The rest of the field will consist of Daniel Altmaier (no.87), Emil Ruusuvuori (no.90), Ričardas Berankis (no.93), and Stefano Travaglia (no.98).

James Duckworth and John Millman were also expected to play but withdrew and got replaced by Hugo Grenier and Quentin Halys, respectively.

Players To Watch Out For

Aslan Karatsev

As the top-seeded player, Aslan Karatsev is also the main favorite to win the 2022 Tata Open Maharashtra. But there are more reasons to favor the Russian tennis star than just his current world ranking.

Karatsev kicked off the season by winning the Sydney International on June 15, where he beat Kecmanovic (6-5, 6-4), Sonego (6-2, 3-6, 6-2), Evans (6-3, 6-7, 6-3), and Murray (6-3, 6-3) in the finals. But unfortunately, the 28-year-old was not nearly as impressive at the 2022 Australian Open.

At the first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year, Karatsev showed solid form early, beating Munar (3-2) and McDonald (3-1), but he met his match in the third round, where he lost against Mannarino (6-7, 7-6, 5-7, 4-6) in a very closely contested bout.

But while Karatsev was unable to repeat his run from 2021 and reach SF in Melbourne, he has done enough this season to be viewed as one of the main favorites to defeat a significantly weaker field.

Jiří Veselý

Jiří Veselý enters the 2022 Tata Open Maharashtra as the defending champion. He won the tournament in 2020 when he edged out Egor Gerasimov with 2-1 and became the first Czech tennis player since Michal Tabara in 2001 to lift the trophy in India.

But while Veselý was the best player on the Mhalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex two years back, it’s unlikely that he will manage to replicate that success this time out. Admittedly, he was much lower-rated back then, but it’s worth noting that Veselý hasn’t achieved anything since he made QF at the Challenger Eckental in November 2021.

The 2020 Maharashtra Open is beside the 2015 Auckland Open, the only ATP title Veselý has ever won. So while he was the champion here two years back, it’s fair to start questioning whether it was more of a fluke run rather than an indication of greatness.

Emil Ruusuvuori

Emil Ruusuvuori might not be one of the main favorites to win the tournament, but he is in the form of his career. The current no.72 had done exceptionally well at the start of the month when he reached the semi-finals at Rod Laver Arena, with wins against Thompson (2-1), Baez (2-0), and Molcan (2-0) before he had to admit defeat to Rafael Nadal with 4-6, 5-7.

At the 2022 Australian Open, Ruusuvuori couldn’t make it past the first round. But he deserves some slack since he lost against the eventual quarter-finalist, Auger-Aliassime, in five sets (4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6).

So while Ruusuvuori hasn’t won anything this season, his only two losses of 2022 came against two top-10 rated players in the world. What’s more, in both of those matches, the Finn showed up and looked highly competitive.

Ruusuvuori will be overlooked by many, but he is a sleeper pick to go all the way and win the 2022 Maharashtra Open.
