BMW Open by American Express Odds, Picks, and Tennis Betting Analysis

The clay court season continues on the ATP Tour, with the French Open now just a month away. One of the two ATP 250 level tournaments this week is the BMW Open, presented by American Express. Also known as the Bavarian International Tennis Championships, the BMW is a clay-court event held at the MTTC Iphitos in Munich, Germany, and dates back to 1900.

Let’s take a look at the ATP odds for the 2023 BMW Open by American Express and some of the tournament favorites at MyBookie.

When: April 15-23
Where: Munich
TV / Streaming: Tennis Channel

Holger Rune is both the defending champion and the No. 1 seed for this year’s event. American Taylor Fritz is the No. 2 seed, with German-born Alexander Zverev as the No. 3 seed. Last year’s runner-up, Botic Van de Zandschulp, is the No. 4 seed.

Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, and Monte Carlo winner Andrey Rublev are all playing elsewhere this week. Meanwhile, the king of the clay court, Rafael Nadal, continues to rehab an Australian Open injury.

Rune the Favorite

Rune is the top seed and the MyBookie betting favorite for the BMW Open. It will be interesting to see how he bounces back in his first match in Munich after blowing a 4-1 lead in the third set of the Monte Carlo Masters and losing to Andrey Rublev.

His path to the final in Monte Carlo was impressive, beating red-hot Jannik Sinner in the semis and Medvedev in the quarters. Last year in Munich, he upset the favored top seed Zverev in the second round and won the event as a wild card entry. Rune is 4-1 on clay this year and 18-8 overall on the season, with three of those loses coming to Top-10 players.

Zverev Looking to Kick Start the Season

The 2023 season has been a bit stop-and-start for Zverev, with an overall record of 10-10, and his ranking has dropped to 16th. Last week he won his first two matches in Monte Carlo before taking Medvedev to a third-set tiebreak. The loss was his fourth straight this year to a player ranked in the Top 10, and it marked just the third time in eight tournaments he’s been past the second round.

Zverev has been really good on clay in his career, with a .720 win percentage and six titles. Two of those titles have come in Munich with back-to-back triumphs in 2017 and 2018. He will have the backing of the pro-German crowd and shouldn’t be challenged until the semis when he likely faces Rune.

Bottom Half of the Draw

Aside from Rune and Zverev, the player in the bottom of the draw to watch is Fritz. The American was great last week in Monte Carlo with an early win over Stan Wawrinka and a straight sets win over defending champion Tsitsipas in the quarters. He also took eventual champion Rublev to the wire with a 6-3 loss in the third set.

Fritz is still looking for his first title on clay but does have a winning record on the surface. There aren’t any other top 20 players in his half of the draw though he does have some clay court specialists to contend with.

Van de Zandschulp is the other player with a bye in the bottom half. He reached the final in Munich last year but has never won an official ATP title on any surface. Marc-Andrea Huesler and Roberto Carballes Baena are the other seeded players in the half of the draw, and both are very good clay court players.
