Dan Evans

It’s rarely worth betting on one of the tournament favorites to deliver, especially so early into the season, but Dan Evans’ form made us rethink that. The 31-year-old started the 2022 season in Sydney last week when he helped Great Britain perform well in the ATP Cup team competition.

Although his nation narrowly missed on on the knockout stage, we have to recognize just how well Evans played, winning all five games he was selected to play. That included three straight-set victories against Denis Shapovalov, Jan-Lennard Struff, and John Isner, which is impressive considering Shapovalov and Isner are both higher ranked than Evans.

From the looks of it, Evans has shifted into a higher gear recently and is playing at the top level, making him a dangerous opponent to face for anyone. Most notably, his backhand looked much improved, which could come in handy as he launches an attack on the ATP Sydney Tennis Classic title.

It’s also worth noting that Evans was in the final in Sydney in 2017, while last year he won in Melbourne, a week before the Australian Open. With the strong form he has been showing, Evans should feel confident in his ability to win the title, and we have no reason to doubt him.

Jordan Thompson

If betting on one of the favorites isn’t your thing, or if you’re looking for a bet on one of the outsiders, Jordan Thompson is the guy. Not only has he shown enough for us to have faith in him to cause some damage, but Tompson also seems to have a fairly straightforward draw.

He first plays Marcos Giron, who was beaten by Ricardas Berankis last week, and after that, he could face Kyrgios or Opelka. That might not seem optimal, but Thompson is known to perform well against big servers, so it’s unlikely that he will struggle against either of them.

We have to mention that Thompson already won against Opelka, and he has done well against Kyrgios in Wimbledon, forcing a fifth set. Even his compatriot has noted that he expects Thompson to have a strong showing in 2022, and we have no reason to doubt Kyrgios’s assessment.

Admittedly, Thompson failed to impress in his season opener in Melbourne, where he lost in three sets against Emil Ruusuvuori. Still, he went down to a player that would make the semis, so there is no harm in that.

Last season, Thomson made final eight in Melbourne and had made quarters here in 2019, so he knows his way around the Australian courts. And on the topic of Australian courts, Thompson is going to enjoy great support at the venue, which in combination with his strengths and a fairly weak draw, makes Thompson a solid outsider pick.
