The Aces return the roster that has won back to back titles. It was the first time they took the title in back to back seasons since Los Angeles did it back in 2001 and 2002. It is going to be awfully tough to dethrone this franchise right. They can score, they can defend, and they play a style of basketball that is unmatched in the league.  They finished the regular season with 34 wins in 40 games. The Aces return the previous finals MVPS in Chelsea Gray and A’Ja Wilson.  Vegas is such big favorites, you can only get even money betting on them right now.

New York Liberty +280

After going 23-8 during the regular season, including 15-5 on the road, the Liberty battled, but came up a bit short in the finals. The Liberty got to the finals for the first time since 2002, and as successful of a franchise as they have been, their lack of success in the postseason has been troubling.  The Liberty have never won the title. New York comes into the season a little under 3/1 to win the title.

Connecticut Sun +120

The Sun got to the title round in 2022, but lost to Vegas. It was their first trip since 2019.  The Sun have never won a WNBA title. A season ago, the Sun finished with the third best record, with 27 wins and 13 losses. The Sun were just as good on the road as they were at home. They should be another contender this season as their roster is full of talented, and experienced players.

Seattle Storm +1200

It is a little surprising to see the Storm so high in the odds, but maybe the 2023 season was not the real Seattle Storm. They certainly hope, as they finished as the second worst team in the league with just 11 wins in 40 games. Seattle was terrible away from home, with just four wins in 20 games. The Storm also did not finish strong, as they lost their final four games. This is a franchise that won titles in 2010, 2018 and 2020. The loss of Breanna Stewart, who was their first pick in the 2016 draft has hurt them, but they are looking for players to step up when the 2024 season tips off.

Dallas Wings +1400
Dallas finished fourth a season ago with a 22-18 record.

Indiana Fever +2200
The Fever are projected to have the #1 pick in the draft. Indiana went 13-27 a season ago.

Phoenix Mercury +2200
The Mercury were the worst team in the league a season ago. Phoenix lost their final 11 games and finished 9-31.

Atlanta Dream +5000
The Dream went 19-21 a season ago, for the fifth best record in the league.

The Sky, who won the title in 2021 went just 18-22 last season.

The Sparks are one of the biggest underdogs coming into the season at 80/1 odds. Los Angeles went 17-23 last season.

2024 WNBA Calendar Rundown

• Season opener – Tuesday May 14th, 2024 with a four pack of games. The highlights of the night include the  New York Liberty taking on the Washington Mystics, followed by the Las Vegas Aces and Phoenix Mercury.

• This is the 28th regular season of the WNBA

• Each team will play 40 games. 20 at home and 20 on the road.

• The Commissioner’s Cup will stretch for two weeks in June, starting on June 1st with Chicago taking on Indiana.

• The All Star Game will be played on July 20th in Phoenix

• The season will feature a two week break for the Summer Olympics in Paris. The league is off from July 21st until August 14th.

• The regular season will conclude on Thursday September 19th.

• Las Vegas and New York, who played in the finals a season ago, met three times. June 15thm August 17th and September 8th.

• The 2024 WNBA Draft is in April. April 15th, which follows just a few days after the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball season comes to an end. There is a potential Caitlin Clark from Iowa will be in the draft.

While the Las Vegas Aces are one win away from becoming the WNBA team to win back-to-back championships in over 20 years, getting that final victory may be an intense labor.

The Aces have been losing key players and will need to think on their feet to outlast the New York Liberty.

The Liberty assembled a super team in the offseason — bringing in Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart, and Courtney Vandersloot — to bring the franchise their first championship.

New York still not Favored to Win the Championship

The Aces were so dominant in the first two games of the series, both double-digit Las Vegas victories; they were road favorites to close things out in Game 3. But the series’ third game at the Barclays Center would be disastrous. 

The Aces’ offense fell apart in the second half, and New York earned a double-digit victory. Las Vegas is still -225 to win the series, while the Liberty are +185.

What could swing the momentum?

Las Vegas took a harsh blow a few months ago when veteran star Candace Parker was injured for the season. The Aces may have lost two more important players due to injury. Chelsea Gray, who was the Finals MVP last season, injured her foot in the fourth quarter and is likely out for the series.

Las Vegas center Kia Stokes was also injured and will be out for at least Game 4. For a team that leaned heavily on its starting five during the first three games of the series, this will cause the Aces to have to innovate. Las Vegas has already said it plans to use Kelsey Plum to run the point in Gray’s absence.

This will mess with the Aces’ offensive flow. Plum is one of the team’s top 3-point shooters and will be more involved with ball handling.

New York’s defense has also figured some things out

The Liberty finally found a way to slow down Las Vegas in Game 3. The Aces only shot 33 percent from the field despite still finding a way to make 23 trips to the free-throw line. New York defended aggressively and clamped down on Aces’ star A’ja Wilson.

Wilson shot 4 of 16 from the field. Las Vegas also only received nine points from its bench. With the injuries the Aces’ suffered during the last game, this isn’t something Las Vegas can afford going forward.

Jones will have plenty of room to operate

Jonquel Jones was already able to get to the rim with little issue. Now that Stokes is out, Jones’ path to scoring easy baskets for the Liberty will be a little easier.

What makes Jones challenging to guard is that she can also step out and make 3-pointers. Jones finished with a team-high 23 points in Game 3 and made four 3-pointers.

Jones’ performance, she also grabbed eight rebounds, opened things up for her teammates.

A new WNBA season has arrived, and the era of superteams has been emphasized heading into the 2023 season. The offseason movement saw the best players go to the organizations who treated their players the best.

The Las Vegas Aces are the favorites at +120 to defend their championship. They return A’ja Wilson, Jackie Young, Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, and add the legendary Candace Parker. The only question is whether coach Becky Hammon will remain on the bench through courtship with NBA coaching jobs.

Nearly a co-favorite, the New York Liberty were a pesky team in 2023. They were led by Sabrina Ionescu and Stefanie Dolson, who now have a lot of help. The Liberty signed former MVP Breanna Stewart and the best point guard in the league in Courtney Vandersloot. New York also acquired Jonquel Jones to create one of the most formidable starting lineups. The Liberty are +130 to win the championship.

Second Tier

The Washington Mystics have one of the sport’s best unicorns. Elena Delle Donne is entering her 10th season and at 6 foot 5 is a difficult matchup because of her guard-like skills but also the ability to post up over smaller defenders. 

She wants to win, and she has veterans like Kristi Toliver and Natasha Cloud to aid there. The Mystics also have young guard Jazmine Jones, who has played well and gets a change of scenery. Second-year players Evina Westbrook, Shakira Austin, and new addition Emily Engster add depth to a team in need of it. The Mystics are third on the odds board at +1300.

Then there is the Connecticut Sun, who reached the WNBA Finals a season ago. They are at +1800 to win the championship. While they lost Jones to New York, there is still a strong veteran core returning.

DeWanna Bonner enters her 14th season as a versatile wing. She proved to be the emotional leader during last season’s postseason run. Returning for an 11th season is Tiffany Hayes and Alyssa Thomas is back for her 10th season. Rebecca Allen is another veteran guard back in the mold, while Brionna Jones, the team’s star and former defensive player of the year, enters her seventh season.

Best Longshot

The Phoenix Mercury had a difficult season in 2022. They had to play it without Brittney Griner, a 6-foot-9 center and former MVP. She was detained in Russia in February of that year and was not released until a prisoner swap in December.

It was clearly an emotional season as Skylar Diggins-Smith and Dianna Taurasi both took leave of absence. But they return with their “sister” back in the mix. Griner gives them a great screener, a mismatch in the post, and a great defender who provides a security blanket.

At +2000, that would be a good ticket to hold onto as the season rolls along.

• 2019 WNBA Championship Odds: +185

The Storm outlasted the Washington Mystics last season to nab their 3rd WNBA title and first since 2010. While that makes them a worthy favorite heading into the new season, it is worth remembering that we have not seen a team win it all in back to back seasons for 16 straight years.

The Storm were easily the best team, in the league last year, finishing up the season with a 26-8 record, 3 games up on the chasing pack by the time it was all said and done. Breanna Stewart was the MVP of the WNBA Finals last season and will be looking to lead the way for the champions this season.

Washington Mystics

• 2019 WNBA Championship Odds: +400

The Mystics somewhat came out of nowhere last season, as their appearance in the WNBA Final was their first ever. They ended up finishing 3rd overall in the league, 4 games behind the Storm at 22-12.

They were among the favorites heading into the postseason, but given their previous lack of success, you always felt that they would come up a little short, which they eventually did in the championship game. This is a team that should bounce right back after gaining some great experience last year. I think they might just win it all this time around.

Connecticut Sun

• 2019 WNBA Championship Odds: +700

Last season was a bit of a return to form for a Sun team that really hadn’t delivered anything in the postseason for quite some time. They ended up as runner-up in consecutive seasons in 2004 and 2005, after which they did not get back to the final.

The Sun closed out the season with a 21-13 regular season record, closing things out with a run of 3-straight wins that didn’t carry over into the postseason. If they can take another step forward this year, there is no reason they can’t make a deep run in the playoffs.

Los Angeles Sparks

• 2019 WNBA Championship Odds: +750

Even people who don’t follow the WNBA all that closely know about the LA Sparks. While they may be the best-known team in the league, they have not had a ton of success in recent seasons. They were the last team to win back to back championships, with those wins coming in 2001 and 2002.

Their last title came in 2016, which they followed up by losing in the final the following year. At 19-15 last season, the Sparks made the postseason but were simply not good enough to win it all. They should be a postseason team again this year, but I would be looking elsewhere for a champion.

MVP: Elena Delle Donne (Washington Mystics)

Delle Donne is a flat-out scoring machine that will be even more comfortable in her second season with the Washington Mystics than she was a year ago. The Delaware native averaged 19.7 points per game last season while shooting a career-high 49.4 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from three-point distance. The Mystics went 18-16 last season to finish tied with Phoenix for the fifth-best record in the league, so they’re clearly not as far off from championship contention as you might mistakenly believe.

The 2015 league MVP should see her scoring average increase with forward Emma Meesseman sitting out this coming WNBA season. If she can put the Mystics on her back and carry them into the postseason, it could very easily happen that she wins the MVP award!

 

Rookie of the Year: A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces)

After a 15-year run in San Antonio, the franchise is now being called the Las Vegas Aces and I see absolutely no reason why the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, A’ja Wilson won’t win the WNBA Rookie of the Year award. The 6-5 Wilson possesses a rare combination of size, power, athleticism, and shooting ability that is as rare a four-leaf clover.

The former South Carolina star and NCAA Player of the Year have superstardom written all over her bright future. Wilson will also be playing for one of the best coaches in WNBA history in Bill Laimbeer.

 

Defensive Player of the Year: Brittney Griner (Phoenix Mercury)

This pick is an absolute no-brainer. Brittney Griner is hands-down the best defensive player in the league and the only player that can affect the outcome of games with her defense along.

Her four blocks per game in 2015 are a WNBA record, and so too are the 3.3 blocks she averages for her career. Hell, forget about Defensive Player of the Year, Griner could win that and the league MVP award as well.

Finals WNBA Betting Prediction: Lynx Over Mercury in 4

I like Phoenix to end the Lynx vs. Sparks Finals matchups we’ve seen the last two season, but I am still expecting Maya Moore and company to go back-to-back by beating the Phoenix Mercury in four games.

The Lynx are loaded with talent, plus they have experience and great leadership, which will be more than enough to get past Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner.
