Neither team is in the hunt to represent the Western Conference in the Commissioner’s Cup, but plenty is still at stake. The Storm (13-8) are fourth in the league standings, and it’s always eventful with Sue Bird on her retirement tour. The Sparks (9-11) are in the thick of the playoff hunt.
Veteran forward Nneka Ogwumike is the Sparks’ leading scorer and 18.6 points per game. They also added Liz Cambage from Las Vegas, but the pairing hasn’t turned into victories at the rate they’d like.
Chicago Sky at Minnesota Lynx, Wednesday
This game was picked for no reason other than a little daytime betting on Wednesday afternoon. Two teams are at opposite ends of the standings heading toward the All-Star break, including the Sky sitting atop the WNBA at 15-5 and on a five-game winning streak.
The Lynx (7-15) are powered by 36-year-old center Sylvia Fowles, a 6 foot 6 center who averages 14.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. It’s a tough matchup for a Sky team who thrives on perimeter play despite having an abundance of frontcourt depth.
Phoenix Mercury at Los Angeles Sparks, Monday
At 9-13, the Mercury had a disappointing season after playing in the WNBA Finals a season ago. Of course, it would be difficult without All-League player Brittney Griner, who is still on trial in Russia.
Their guard play is so strong, with one of the best to ever do it in Diana Taurasi. Skylar Diggins-Smith is another key veteran alongside her, with complementary guards Sophie Cunningham and Diamond DeShields, allowing for spacing and slashing to keep their attack off balance.
It’ll be an interesting matchup of great guard play opposing great frontcourt play for the Sparks. The strength-on-strength battles are often entertaining.
Washington Mystics at Atlanta Dream, Wednesday
Elena Delle Donne is the unicorn of the league as a 6-foot-5 point forward who can play on the perimeter or take mismatches down low. When healthy, she’s a joy to watch, and the Mystics (13-10) are in the playoff hunt with the league’s fifth-best record. Right behind them are the Dream (10-11).
It’s been a dream for the Dream, who don’t know any better than what they’ve been doing. They are youthful, with six players with two years of experience or less, led by rookie Rhyne Howard.
She’s averaging 15.3 points per game, with Aari McDonald averaging 11.2 points per game. McDonald and Asia Durr (13.1 ppg) both come off the bench.
New York Liberty at Las Vegas Aces, Wednesday
Might as well make it a triple-header on Wednesday. The Aces (15-6) are fighting for the league’s best record, while the Liberty (8-12) are improving as the season goes along. Becky Hammon took the Aces job for her first head coaching gig, being denied opportunities in the NBA, and has proven those against her wrong.
Her Aces are the highest-scoring team in the league, led by Kelsey Plum’s 20.0 points and 5.7 assists per game. They still have former MVP A’ja Wilson, who averages 18.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. They also have developed consistency.
Meanwhile, the Liberty are led by Sabrina Ionescu, who, with good health figures, held the league’s triple-double record by herself for a long time. She averages 16.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game. Flanked by Natasha Howard and Stefanie Dolson, the Liberty can provide challenges to opposing frontcourts.
