It’s another big weekend of racing in IndyCar this weekend, with the end of the season now very much in sight.
While there are 5 races to come, there are only 4 weekends of racing to come, with one of the remaining events being a doubleheader weekend.

My Bommarito Automotive Group 50 Analysis
As always seems to be the case with IndyCar, it is looking as though the race for the top spot is going to go all the way down to the wire.
We do have a familiar face at the top of the driver standings, but will it remain that way through the final 5 races?
We might get a clearer picture after this weekend’s race, which is the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 in Madison, Illinois.
Let’s take a look at the potential winners here.
^Àlex Palou
With 2 championship wins in the last 3 seasons, Palou came into 2024 as the favorite to win it all again.
He is very much living up to the hype, as he is once again in the #1 spot in the driver standings with the season winding down.
A lead at this late stage is always good, but it is far from a convincing lead, with Palou 49 points up on the chasing pack.
He has not won for a while now, though, although he does have a pair of podium finishes in his last 4 races.
The Gateway track is one that has not been kind to Palou, so I’m not sure his winless streak ends this weekend.

Will Power
It has been a strange kind of season for Power, who is currently sitting in 2nd overall.
He has been perhaps too inconsistent to win a championship, but that said, he seems to be able to come up with a win just when it looks like he is going to fall out of the championship race.
Can he do that again this weekend on the Gateway track?
Power has been decent at this venue and has been in the top 10 in each of the last 3 seasons. He needs more than that to put pressure on Palou, so I might take him for a top 3 finish.
^Scott Dixon
If I was going to pick anyone to pull off the comeback and run down Palou for the win, I would probably go with Scott Dixon.
This is a driver with nothing else to prove in this sport when you consider he has multiple championships under his belt.
That said, he never seems content to rest on his laurels and is once again within striking distance of the lead.
He has been on good form of late, too, finishing no worse than 4th in each of his last 2 races. He won this race last season, and I like him to repeat.
^Colton Herta
At this stage of the proceedings, you would have to say that Herta is a longshot to come from behind and win it all, but he certainly made things interesting with a win in Toronto in the previous race.
That victory leaves him 57 points out of the top spot, with 3 drivers ahead of him, so a lot would need to go his way for Herta to end the season as the new champion.
He has never cracked the top 5 on the Gateway track, so I am not sold on him this weekend.

2023 Bommarito Automotive Group 500
In any sport decided by a points system, we always reach the stage where the math becomes crucial. We have to look at the number of games/races remaining, as well as the point differential at the top and the likelihood of anyone closing that gap. It may sound complicated, but it is in fact rather straightforward. That is the stage we are at in the 2023 IndyCar season, as there are now just 3 races to come and a leader at the top of the driver standings who can almost certainly taste the championship. The first of those races comes this weekend with the running of the Bommarito Automotive Group 500. Let’s take a look at the major players here to consider in your IndyCar betting odds.

Alex Palou
Palou is the man with the math on his side heading into this weekend, as his lead at the top is sitting at 101 points. When you consider that the maximum points a driver can pick up in any race, other than the Indianapolis 500, is 54, he is about as close to winning his 2nd championship as you can get. After a hot streak in the middle of the season, Palou has cooled off a little in the past few races, but he is at the stage where he doesn’t really need to win, just as long as he picks up points. In fact, he could seal the championship this weekend, although this is a track that has not been particularly kind to him.

Scott Dixon
The IndyCar veteran is having another solid season, and while he is still mathematically in the hunt for the championship, he has been around the track long enough to know that it is probably a lost cause at this point. Dixon did keep his hopes of a 7th title alive with a win in Indianapolis last time out, but with over 100 points still to make up, he needs to be perfect in the final 3 races and hope that Palou goes in the tank. Dixon finished 8th in this race in 2022 and needs to do better than that to stay alive.

Josef Newgarden
Here is another former champion who is currently 4 points out of 2nd place and essentially in the same pickle as Dixon in regards the World Championship. No driver is going to concede the crown until it is mathematically done, but I’m sure that all of these guys are well aware of just how unlikely someone other than Palou winning it all this year really is. Newgarden has had some great moments this season, but he has been inconsistent at times, which is what will ultimately cost him. He has won this race in 3 straight seasons and is the obvious favorite.

Scott McLaughlin
The remaining drivers in the group are all out of the championship race, but they will all still be jockeying for the consolation positions over the final few races. For McLaughlin, the goal now is to finish higher than he did last season, which was 4th, his best showing under the IndyCar banner. In his previous 2 runs on this track, he has finished no worse than 4th, so taking him to land on the podium seems a good bet.
