Realistically, though, with just 2 rounds to come this season, it is beginning to look as though the current leader will be the one to win it all. Alvaro Bautista

The current defending champion made a huge step toward his second consecutive world championship with a strong showing in Spain in the last race on the schedule. He started the weekend by failing to finish the opening race, but he then came good, winning the next two races to take a firm grip on the top spot. Bautista now has a 47-point lead at the top and could well cement his 2nd straight title with a strong showing in Portugal. Last season, he had a solid weekend there, winning one and finishing 2nd in the other 2 races, so there is plenty to suggest he will have a great weekend.

Toprak Raztgatlioglu

The Turkish rider won the championship back in the 2021 season, and while he is giving Bautista a run for his money this year, he is running out of time to close the gap. He had a decent enough weekend in Spain in the previous round, landing on the podium in all 3 races, but with Bautista winning 2 of those races, he really didn’t do enough to cut into the lead. Portugal is a destination that Razgatlioglu seems to enjoy, though, as he had a pair of wins and a 2nd place finish in the 3 races there last year. A similar performance could keep things interesting.

Jonathan Rea

His dominant years, when he won 6 straight world championships in World SBK are behind him, but Rea is still a strong competitor who will more than likely land in the top 3 overall this season. Rea frequently lands on the podium, but he has not been able to translate those strong showings into regular wins in 2023, taking the checkered flag just once thus far. He finished 3rd in all 3 races in Portugal last season and seems like a good bet to deliver more of the same this time around, which is how I would play him this weekend.

Andrea Locatelli

This is just the 3rd season in Superbike for Locatelli, and while he has been a consistent performer, he is still looking for his first ever win at this level. You do get the sense that he will get there eventually, but I’m just not so sure we will see it happen this weekend, especially with the tight battle going on at the top of the standings. Locatelli failed to crack the top 5 in 3 attempts in Portugal last season.
