Despite being just over four hours away from each other, the Kansas Jayhawks and Arkansas Razorbacks football teams haven’t met on the gridiron since 1906. That’s all about to change on December 28th, as these two will meet in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis.
Both teams enter the bowl season with a 6-6 record. While Kansas was one of the biggest surprises this season, Arkansas’s season record is considered to be a big disappointment, as much was expected from this squad this season. Let’s preview each team in this matchup, and then we’ll give you our NCAA Football Bowl Betting prediction for the 2022 Liberty Bowl.
Who is Playing in the Liberty Bowl? | Kansas versus Arkansas
Kansas Jayhawks
Lance Leipold has done a great job rebuilding one of the country’s worst Division 1 football programs. Kansas had long been known as one of the worst programs, but Leipold and his offensive approach have brought the program back to relevance. Prior to the season, experts predicted that the Jayhawks would have a hard time winning two games.
When Jalon Daniels went down with a shoulder injury, that really hurt the Kansas Jayhawks offense. The signal-caller was leading a very potent Kansas offense, and when he went down, the Jayhawks offense wasn’t nearly as good. Daniels will be playing in this one and should have a full arsenal of weapons available.
The Kansas defense has its work cut out for them, as Arkansas has the ninth-ranked rushing offense in the country. Kansas’s defense hasn’t been very good this season, so we’ll see how successful they’ll be at slowing the Razorbacks ground game down.
Arkansas Razorbacks
As we stated, this season has been a disappointment for the Razorbacks. Much more was expected from this squad. KJ Jefferson will lead the offense in the Liberty Bowl. He’ll be flanked by running back Rocket Sanders. Arkansas is averaging nearly 235 yards on the ground per game, and Sanders has rushed for over 1400 yards on the season. Despite the Arkansas Razorbacks missing numerous offensive pieces due to injury and sitting out to prepare for the NFL Draft, this group should see some success against a subpar Kansas defense.
Defensively, Arkansas will be missing some key pieces. Their top two linebackers won’t be playing, as All-American Drew Sanders has opted to skip the game to prepare for the draft. Arkansas will have numerous backups in some key positions, so we’ll see how they handle a very good Kansas offense.
Prediction
The Arkansas Razorbacks have been made a three-point favorite for the Liberty Bowl matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks. The Arkansas running game will pose a huge challenge for the Jayhawks defense. They will try and control the ball to keep the Kansas offense off of the field. We anticipate this one being a high-scoring affair, as the Kansas defense is suspect, and the Razorbacks defense will be missing many key pieces.
We like the Razorbacks to win this one by a score of 49-42, thus winning the game and covering the three-point spread. This one should be a very fun one to watch!
