Last Season

UNC won in Miami last year 27-24. Drake Maye passed for 309 yards and two touchdowns, one of them a 74-yarder to J.J. Jones. Josh Downs had a receiving touchdown and Omarion Hampton ran for another score for North Carolina. Tyler Van Dyke completed 42 of 57 passes for 496 yards — the second-most in Miami history — and three touchdowns for Miami. North Carolina punted the ball back to UM with 1:14 left, but Van Dyke was picked off with 8 seconds remaining. The Heels lead the all-time series 13-11 with two wins vacated by the NCAA.

Why Bet on Miami?

All the Hurricanes had to do Saturday against Georgia Tech was take a knee in the final seconds and it would have escaped a Georgia Tech upset. With Tech out of timeouts, the Hurricanes’ win probability peaked at 99.4% late in the game.

For some reason, though, the Canes ran a running play and Don Chaney Jr. fumbled with 26 seconds remaining, and the play was reviewed and upheld, giving the Jackets life. Tech QB Haynes King completed a 30-yarder to Malik Rutherford to move the ball to Canes 44. After spiking the ball, King rolled right and completed the winning 44-yard TD throw to Christian Leary with one second left.

Miami has not lined up in victory formation in any of its five games this season, opting instead to hand the ball off. But this was the first time Miami was involved in a one-score game. Georgia Tech had no timeouts left, so a kneel-down would have won the game. Miami is the only team in the FBS to lose twice as at least 19-point favorites since the start of last season.

“I made the wrong call,” coach Mario Cristobal said. “I take full ownership in not taking a knee and giving them the opportunity to have a couple extra plays and preventing us from sealing the win.”

The Hurricanes’ defense dominated the Yellow Jackets for large portions of the game, allowing 61 total yards on 24 plays in the first half. But they couldn’t get a stop in the waning seconds.

Canes QB Tyler Van Dyke is having a nice bounce-back season but was 24-for-36 passing for 288 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions against the Jackets. After three games without a turnover, the Hurricanes’ signal caller finished with multiple interceptions.

“Can’t force the ball, make dumb decisions,” Van Dyke said. “Just have to do better.”

Across the last four games, Van Dyke has thrown for 11 touchdowns to go along with three picks. Chaney totaled 24 carries for 106 yards. He got more run with fellow tailback Mark Fletcher out. Safety Kamren Kinchens, played for the first time Saturday since sustaining an unspecified head/neck injury making a hard-hitting tackle late in the game against Texas A&M Sept. 9.

Why Bet on North Carolina?

The Tar Heels are 5-0 for the first time since 1997 and only its second 5-0 start since 1983 following a 40-7 rout of Syracuse on Saturday. Carolina amassed 424 yards of total offense in a suffocating first half, including 280 through the air from quarterback Drake Maye and a rushing advantage of 144-15. By the end of the game, UNC piled up a season-high 644 yards.

Maye had a season-high 442 yards passing (six shy of his career high) and three touchdowns, including 23 of 35 for 280 yards and two scores while completing passes to 10 different receivers in the first half. He also ran for 55 yards and a TD. Wide receiver Nate McCollum had seven catches for 135 yards, averaging 19.3 per grab. Kobe Paysour tallied three grabs for 100 yards and a 76-yard touchdown on a one-handed catch. Another wideout, transfer Tez Walker made his UNC debut and caught six passes for 43 yards.

Maye has thrown for at least 200 yards in all 19 starts of his career and has tossed multiple TD passes in 15 of those starts. He reached both of those thresholds in the first half against the Orange. Maye joined T.J. Yates, Mitch Trubisky and Sam Howell as the only Tar Heels with three career 400+ yard passing games. Maye is the only UNC quarterback to begin a season by completing at least 20 passes in five straight games.

Carolina has scored at least 30 points in each of its first five games in 2023 and has won 10 consecutive games when scoring 30 or more. UNC is averaging 500.0 yards per game, good for 9th in the FBS. On third down, UNC has converted a first down 56.6 percent of the time, which is 2nd in the FBS.

North Carolina boasts a 7-3 record versus the Hurricanes at Kenan Stadium. Three of the last four games between the Tar Heels and Hurricanes overall have been decided by three points.
