In 2022, Utah beat visiting Oregon State 42-16. Cameron Rising threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns and added 73 yards and a score on the ground for the Utes but has yet to play this season off injury. Clark Phillips III had three picks for Utah, which finished with four overall for the first time since 2016. Two of those takeaways came in the red zone. Ben Gulbranson threw for 177 yards and two interceptions to lead the Beavers. Gulbranson played the final three quarters after starter Chance Nolan left with a neck strain. The all-time series is tied 12-12-1.

Why Bet on Utah?

Utah (4-0) opened Pac-12 play with a 14-7 home win over No. 22 UCLA on Saturday. Utah scored one touchdown on defense in the game’s first minute and added its second touchdown in the final minutes of the second quarter. The Utes extended their home winning streak to 17 games.

It was the 13th time since joining the Pac-12 that the Utes have held a conference opponent to single digits. Utah held the Bruins to just 243 total yards with UCLA only converting on 3-of-16 on third downs with just 11 first downs. The Utes kept UCLA to nine yards rushing, the third time this season that Utah has kept its opponent to under 100 yards rushing. Utah also only allowed the Bruins to produce 3.4 yards per play in the game and just 0.3 yards per rush. It marks the first time since the 2001 season in which UCLA has held the opposition to 14 points or fewer in the season’s first four games.

Utah’s defense currently leads the league in seven statistical categories, including ranking in the top-10 in the FBS in third down conversion percentage (No. 1), defensive touchdowns (No. 3), rushing defense (No. 3), scoring defense (No. 6) and total defense (No. 9).

On offense, Utah finished the game with 219 yards, including 102 rushing and 117 passing. The Utes also recorded 13 first downs, and won the time of possession battle at 34:28 to 25:32. QB Nate Johnson completed 9 of 17 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. UCLA. He also had 14 rushes for two yards. While Johnson was somewhat efficient, his dual-throat capability was neutralized in the win. Johnson has been starting with Cameron Rising still recovering from a knee injury.

The 14 points scored for the Utes marked the team’s first win since 2008 (13 vs. TCU; 13 vs. New Mexico) when scoring 14 or fewer points. Utah is 4-0 to start the season for the first time since 2017. The Utes are 27-6 in conference games since 2019.

Why Bet on Oregon State?

Oregon State (3-1) opened league play with a 38-35 loss at No. 21 Washington State last Saturday to see its seven-game winning streak snapped.

Beavers QB DJ Uiagalelei tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jack Velling with 1:12 left to pull OSU 38-35. The Cougars recovered the ensuing onside kick after a mad scramble for the ball, and once the final snap was taken, fans rushed the field. Oregon State and Washington State have formed a strong bond off the field as they search for a new conference home – or try to salvage the Pac-12 by recruiting new schools to join.

Deshaun Fenwick rushed for three touchdowns and 101 yards to lead the Beavers, who were down by as many as 21 in the third. Fenwick’s scores came on dashes of 38, nine and four yards. Uiagalelei led OSU with 198 yards through the air and also added 61 yards on the ground. Easton Mascarenas-Arnold led the defense with 10.0 total tackles – including three solo stops.

Oregon State’s secondary had a disastrous performance in the loss. Right from the get-go Wazzu had no trouble against the Beavs with a Cam Ward to Kyle Williams 63 yard TD on the second snap of the game. Tyrice Ivy was picked on consistently in the first two drives leading to freshman Jermod McCoy taking over. Struggles continued for McCoy including allowing a one-handed TD catch from Josh Kelly, and he was benched with Ryan Cooper sliding over from nickel back and Josiah Johnson replacing him.

A return home may cure all as OSU has won six straight at Reser Stadium, tied for the eighth-longest active streak nationally. Oregon State is 2-8 overall against ranked teams under head coach Jonathan Smith, with both wins coming against Oregon.

Oregon State is 23-6 when leading at halftime under Smith. The Beavers are also 22-3 when taking a lead into the fourth quarter. The Beavers are 19-12 when controlling time of possession. OSU is 24-11 when scoring first. The Beavers are 12-2 when holding an opponent to 21 points or less.
