Series History

While the Pac-12 doesn’t have divisions any longer – and is going away after this year – these schools had been in opposite divisions so they haven’t played all that often (not since the COVID 2020 season). Overall, Washington holds a 13-2 edge over Utah, but the two UW losses to the Utes have both come at Husky Stadium. Washington has outscored Utah in those 15 games by an average score of 25.1 to 15.1.

Why Bet on Utah?

Utah (7-2, 4-2 Pac-12) still has an outside shot to return to the Pac-12 title game, which it has won the past two years, but not if it loses here. The Utes come off a 55-3 rout of Arizona State last Saturday. ASU lost starting quarterback Trenton Bourguet to an injury on its third offensive play. ASU’s offense was able to muster just 83 total yards behind a depleted offensive line and down to its fourth-string quarterback as injuries limited the Sun Devils’ ability to compete on both sides of the ball. Bourguet attempted to rally and returned for one series in the second quarter, but sat the remainder of the game.

Utah kept Arizona State to 40 yards passing and 43 yards rushing, the fifth time this season the Utes have held an opponent to under 100 yards rushing and the first time since 2021 that Utah has kept an opponent to under 50 yards passing (44 at San Diego State). The Utes racked up a season-high 513 yards on offense which included 161 yards through the air and a season-best 352 rushing yards along with seven total touchdowns (3 rush, 4 rec). Utah averaged 6.7 yards per play, also winning the time of possession battle once again at 36:33 to 23:27.

It was Utah’s first 50-point game since 2022 (63 at Colorado) with the 513 yards also being the most for the Utes since the Pac-12 Championship game against USC (533 yds). Utah’s 352 rushing yards today marked the second time this season the Utes have eclipsed 300 yards rushing (317 vs. Cal), also counting as the most in a game for the Utes since last season against Colorado (383 yds).

Starting quarterback Bryson Barnes improved to 6-1 in his seven career starts, passing for a career-high four touchdowns which ties him for 10th all-time for a single game at Utah. The last four-touchdown passing game by a Ute was from Cameron Rising vs. San Diego State in 2022. The last time a Ute accomplished the feat in a Pac-12 Conference game was Tyler Huntley against USC in 2018. Entering in relief of Barnes during the fourth quarter, Nate Johnson totaled 79 yards on two carries. His rushing total was a career-high as was his long rush of 59 yards for a touchdown. It was the longest rushing touchdown by a Utah quarterback since the Rose Bowl vs. Ohio State on Jan. 2, 2022 (62 yards by Rising).

Running back Ja’Quinden Jackson had 13 carries for 111 yards and a 54-yard touchdown. It pushed Jackson over the 100-yard mark for the fifth time as a Ute and third this season (129 at Baylor, 117 at USC). Through nine games, Utah is one of four teams in the FBS that rank in the top-10 in rushing defense, scoring defense and total defense (Penn State, Michigan, Air Force).

Kyle Whittingham, the winningest head coach in program history, is 161-76 at the helm of the Utes. Including his time as an assistant coach (1994-2004), he has coached in 363 games and contributed to 246 wins, both more than any other coach in program history. Since the 2021 season, Utah is 19-5 in Pac-12 Conference games.

Why Bet on Washington?

Washington (9-0, 6-0 Pac-12) will reach the Pac-12 title game if it wins out and still would even if it loses just once as only Oregon has one loss in the conference while every other team has at least two. The Huskies were 52-42 winners at USC on Saturday. Dillon Johnson rushed for 256 yards and four touchdowns and Heisman Trophy favorite Michael Penix Jr. passed for 256 yards and two scores. Devin Culp and Ja’Lynn Polk caught TD passes from Penix.

Johnson’s second-quarter, 52-yard touchdown run was the longest rushing play of the season for the Huskies. It also put Johnson over 100 yards rushing for the game (he had 10 carries for 104 yards after that play), giving him the second 100-yard game in his career (either at UW or Mississippi State). Johnson’s previous career high was 100 yards, on 20 carries vs. Oregon earlier this season. Johnson’s 256 rushing yards were fifth-most ever by a Husky, and most since Chris Polk went for 284 in the 2010 Apple Cup vs. Washington State. Johnson’s four rushing TDs are tied for fourth-most in UW single-game history. Washington’s 316 rushing yards were most since the 2017 Apple Cup, when the Huskies rushed for 328.

Before last Saturday, Washington had never scored more than 34 points in a game vs. USC. The Huskies blanked the Trojans, 34-0, in 1960, but had never scored more, before or since. The Huskies reached 35 points in the first half last week.

Washington is 9-0 for just the fourth time in school history. Washington has won 16 straight games, the second-longest active streak in the country, behind Georgia, and the third-longest in Husky history (longer UW streaks: 40 straight wins 1908-16; 22 straight wins 1990-92).

Looking ahead to Utah, UM Coach Kalen DeBoer was asked about its 350-yard rushing performance in its 55-3 over Arizona State and the physicality of the Utes.

“They’re very physical, and we all know watching their film over the years that being physical and being tough is what they pride themselves on,” DeBoer said. “That’s how they feel they’re gonna go attack the game and that’s been a big part of their success and back-to-back conference championships. Huge hats off to them and the belief in their identity.”

DeBoer said that wide receiver Jalen McMillan is questionable to play this week. When asked if they had thought about shutting down McMillan, DeBoer said, “As of right now, I don’t think that’s what is is.” McMillan has 20 receptions for 311 yards and 3 touchdowns in five games. Safety Asa Turner will not play this week.
