Projecting the favorite versus the second choice for this year’s Belmont Stakes is handicapping art. Four horses are favorite prospects: Sierra Leone, Mindframe, Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan, and Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey.
Based on early odds and where the money is going, the predicted chalks will be Sierra Leone and Mindframe.
Although plenty of talent will join Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Preakness winner Seize the Grey in the starting gate at the 2024 Belmont Stakes, no doubt, the action will fly to the two Triple Crown race winners.

The Preakness Stakes winner is on the rise. Seize the Grey won the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard in early May.
The performance was so impressive that D. Wayne Lukas decided to enter the Arrogate sired colt into the Preakness.
For sure, Seize the Grey got an easy lead in the second jewel. But the horse still managed to hold off Mystik Dan in the stretch.
Not only that, but Seize the Grey is bred to relish the 1 ¼ mile Belmont Stakes distance.
D. Wayne Lukas has done this before, losing the Derby only to win the second two legs o the Triple Crown.
We should expect Seize the Grey to get a nice stalking position behind Fierceness or to take the lead in the Belmont if Pletcher keeps his Florida Derby winning equine on the bench.
Why Mystik Dan will turn the tables on Seize the Grey in the Belmont Stakes
Johnny Velasquez, Mystik Dan’s jockey, wanted to make sure he left something in Mystik Dan’s tank, which is why Johnny V kept Mystik Dan from going right after Seize the Grey in the Preakness.
If Velasquez had pushed the button on Mystik Dan earlier, the Derby winner is likely to have won the race.
But since Seize the Grey got such an easy lead, there was no way for Mystik Dan to catch the lone front runner.
Johnny V won’t make the same mistake twice.
In the Bemont, Velasquez will put Mystik Dan much closer to the pace early, like he did in the Derby.
Then he will move Mystik Dan at the perfect time to catch the front running rival.
In a two horse battle between Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey, the winner will be . . .
Seize the Grey. Although the Belmont will set up for Mystik Dan, the bottom line is that Dan has had too many races in the past few weeks to catch the rising Seize the Grey.
Mystik Dan peaked in the Preakness. Different tactics would have led to a victory in the second jewel.
Three weeks later, Dan must run 1 ¼ miles again after two difficult races.
Not only that, but if we watch the Preakness stretch run closely, we realize that Mystik Dan began to slightly back pedal once he confronted Seize the Grey.
The D.Wayne Lukas runner is on the rise. In a 2-horse battle, Seize the Grey finishes ahead of Mystik Dan in the Belmont.
Who will win in a Belmont Stakes rematch between Sierra Leone vs Mindframe?
Why will Seirra Leone and Mindframe Break from the Gate at Lower Odds than Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey?
Both Seirra Leone and Mindframe are fresh but that isn’t the only reason the two will break from the gate at lower odds than Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey.
Sierra Leone lost to Mystik Dan at the Kentucky Derby by a nose.
A single change in the race and Sierra Leone heads to Pimlico with a chance to win the second jewel. Mindframe has dominated his competition in two races.
Also, Mystik Dan and Seize the Grey will have run three races in the span of 5 weeks. Few modern day horses are capable of producing three straight top efforts in the span of 5 weeks.
So horseplayers, at least so far, are backing Sierra Leone and Mindframe over Seize the Grey and Mystik Dan.
What gives Sierra Leone the Edge Against Mindframe?
Sierra Leone has much more experience than Mindframe. Not only that, but the horse stepped it up to win the Bluegrass Stakes and then gave Mystik Dan the fight of his life in the Kentucky Derby.
Also, Sierra Leone out finished the best international three year old in the world in the Derby, Forever Young.
The horse has had a freshening and Chad Brown is a master at getting horses to run their best off a layoff.
How can Mindframe Beat Sierra Leone?
Mindframe should get a better trip than Sierra Leone. The scratch of Fierceness, Todd Pletcher is waiting for the Haskell Invitational to run the Florida Derby winner, means Mindframe should sit a nice trip about a length or less behind Seize the Grey.
If Mindframe can finish, Sierra Leone will have too much to do in the stretch to catch the potential Pletcher monster.
Mindframe has an excellent turn of foot, which could end up being the difference.
In the Belmont Stakes, which horse finishes ahead of the other? Sierra Leone or Mindframe?
Mindframe is the pick. As they turn for home, Mindframe will unleash a turn of foot that gets him past Seize the Grey and puts distance between himself and the closers.
Sierra Leone’s turn of foot is also fantastic. But the Chad Brown runner prefers to sit behind horses and make a long run.
At 1 ½ miles that may work, but the set up of this race will make it difficult for Sierra Leone to catch Mindframe.
In a battle between the two projected favorites, back Mindframe to win the head-to-head against Sierra Leone.

Why do Essential Quality and Rombauer offer the same odds?
Essential Quality may have run the best race in the Derby. Rombauer easily won the Preakness. Those are the main reasons Quality and Rombauer are offering favorite’s odds.
Let’s dissect Essential Qualities victory. The Brad Cox trained runner had to go wide around both turns. Although going wide doesn’t always matter, in the Derby it did. Why?
The two-year-old champion chased a soft-pace. Medina Spirit got away with a ridiculously slow second-quarter in close to 25 seconds. So not only did Essential Quality have to run wide around both turns, but he also had to try and rally into a slow pace.
Most horseplayers believe Essential Quality ran an extra 68-feet. The fact he finished fourth by a length with the highest Beyer speed figure he’s ever run speaks volumes.
Rombauer blasted his opponents in the Preakness Stakes. He didn’t just win. The Mike McCarthy trained runner dominated. Rombauer’s turn of foot is electric. If he can get the distance, he should have a great shot to win the third and final jewel.
Known Agenda’s and Rock Your World’s odds drop
The New York Racing Association banned Baffert from running horses at any of their tracks. Bob Baffert horses Medina Spirit and Concert Tour won’t run in the Belmont Stakes.
Because the Baffert runners won’t go, odds on a couple of pre-Kentucky Derby favorites, John Sadler trained Rock Your World and Florida Derby winner Known Agenda, have fallen. Both are down to +700.
Of the pair, Rock Your World appears to have the best shot to win the Belmont. The Santa Anita Derby winner got squeezed back at the start of the Kentucky Derby. He had no shot after that.
Known Agenda didn’t run well in the Derby. He may not be ready to navigate 1 ½ miles. We shall see. But if we had to pick a winner between the pair a couple of weeks out, Rock Your World gets the nod over Known Agenda.
Promise Keeper and Rebel’s Romance getting looks
Todd Pletcher decided to save Malathaat for the big-pursed races at Saratoga. Pletcher could still saddle a couple of Belmont Stakes contenders. One of those contenders may be Promise Keeper.
On MyBookie, the Peter Pan winner offers +1400 odds. On race day, the Pletcher runner could offer odds less than +1000. Todd hasn’t decided if Promise Keeper will run in the Belmont. If he does, he’s got a shot to win.
Sired by Constitution and from a Curlin broodmare, Promise Keeper should excel at the Belmont distance. So should UAE Derby winner Rebel’s Romance.
The Godolphin owned runner shipped to Belmont about three weeks ago. He should be well acclimated while trainer Charles Appleby is one of the best in the world. Romance is bred to be a champion. So if he shows up with his best race, he could pull off a major Belmont Stakes upset.
