2023 Breeders’ Cup Betting: International Runners Strong in Plenty of Races

The morning before Breeders’ Cup Friday doesn’t have much news. The biggest news of the week landed earlier on Tuesday when Arcangelo scratched from the Classic and then retired. Since then, things have been quiet, which might be a good thing because both Practical Move and Geaux Rocket Ride had to be euthanized last week.

So the old saying, “No news is good news,” prevails. Still, there are some things to mention.

Aidan O’Brien brings a strong hand into Breeders’ Cup turf races

Coolmore trainer Aidan O’Brien always sends a top contingent of turf stars to the Breeders’ Cup Thoroughbred World Championships. This year is no different.

O’Brien has runners in the Turf Sprint, the Juvenile Fillies Turf, and the Juvenile Turf on Friday. Then on Saturday, Aidan saddles Warm Heart in the Filly & Mare Turf, and three in the Breeders’ Cup Turf: 15-to-1 Bolshoi Ballet, 3-to-1 chalk Auguste Rodin, and 30-to-1 Brome.

Warm Heart and Auguste Rodin look solid. On Friday, all of O’Brien’s horses appear live. Keep that in mind as you handicap the ponies this weekend.

Japanese trained horses will have a say in the Breeders’ Cup Classic

Japanese trained equines have a strong shot of winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic. UAE Derby winner Derma Sotogake is an overlay at +2000. The Kentucky Derby was a flop. But three-year-olds grow up big time from May to November. Derma should be no different.

Dubai Classic winner Ushba Tesoro is second choice on the morning line after Pacific Classic winner Arabian Knight. Tesoro won the 1 ¼ mile Dubai World Cup over dirt. So the Japanese star is also 3-for-3 at the 1 ¼ mile Classic distance.

Give Tesoro a massive chance to beat the Classic field. Ushba should outclass most of the other entrants and has a good chance of catching Arabian Knight, out running White Abbario, and holding off Dreamlike, Senor Buscador, and Zandon.

Richard Dutrow Jr. returns after a 10-year stint in purgatory for a chance at redemption with White Abbario

Speaking of White Abbario, trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. hopes to make a massive splash with the Grade 1 Whitney winner. Dutrow had to spend 10-years on the pine, an entire decade banishment and just got his trainer’s license back in 2023.

Abbario showed a new dimension in the Metropolitan Handicap and the Whitney as soon as Dutrow took over training duties from Saffie Joseph Jr. For sure, White Abbario can win the Classic.

The only knock is with the horse itself. Abbario isn’t bred to win at 1 ¼ miles. The Whitney runs at 1 1/8 miles. So we can’t use that as a measuring stick. But Dutrow is such a good horseman that he might get enough out of White Abbario to help his star equine outrun the pedigree.

Baffert looking to make a statement

Churchill Downs continues to blame Bob Baffert for their issues. The Twin Spires had at least 9 horses die on the racetrack this past spring leading up to and after the Kentucky Derby.

Things got so bad that they closed up shop for the rest of the meet. Somehow, someway, it’s all Bob Baffert’s fault. Churchill decided to add another year to Bob’s Kentucky Derby ban.

The white haired trainer has an incredibly strong group running on Saturday. Arabian Knight is the chalk in the Classic and rates as the Baffert runner with the best chance.

But Bob also has live horses in the Dirt Mile, the Filly & Mare Sprint, the Sprint, the Mile, and the Distaff. Baffert plans on making a statement. Backing Bob runners blind might not be a bad strategy.
