2022 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships

• When: Friday, Nov. 4 – Saturday, Nov. 5

Friday, Nov. 4

• For Sure Bet: Cave Rock – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

The way Cave Rock put away stablemate National Treasure in the Grade 1 American Pharoah in his last implies an easy BC Juvenile victory. Unless the Rock isn’t at the top of his game, he should dust his opponents.

• Top Overlay – Chop Chop – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies

At 4-to-1, the City of Light sired miss is an overlay. Chop Chop barely lost to Wonder Wheel in the Grade 1 Alcibiades in her last. The Cox runner made a furious closing move and didn’t slow down after they got past the wire. The Juvenile Fillies sets up for Chop Chop to take the top prize.  

• Second Best Overlay – Lady Hollywood – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint

Her 4 wins have all happened at 5 furlongs. If she can get the the extra half a furlong, she’ll have a chance to get her picture taken. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint often produces huge mutuel payouts. So Lady Hollywood is absolutely worth a look. 

• Biggest Underlay – Chocolate Gelato – Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies

Wonder Wheel carried her speed for 1 1/16 miles in the Alcibiades. Chocolate Gelato won the 1-mile Frizette. Her breeding, Practical Joke and broodmare Special Treat, suggests she will struggle getting the extra 1/16 in this. Don’t accept low odds on this sprinting type filly.  

• Second Biggest Underlay – Meditate – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Meditate is the 4-to-1 morning line chalk. The reason Meditate is the favorite to win the BC Juvenile fillies is because Aidan O’Brien trains. But that’s the only reason. Nothing gives Mediate an edge other than O’Brien is her trainer and that’s not enough to warrant backing. 

Saturday, Nov. 5

• For Sure Bet: Flightline – Breeders’ Cup Classic

The John Sadler trained monster busted a 126 Beyer speed rating to win the Grade 1 Pacific Classic in his last. No horse comes close to being as fast as this guy. Flightline should win for sure. 

• Second Best For Sure Bet: Modern Games – Breeders’ Cup Mile

The 7-to-2 morning line is a gift. No horse should challenge the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile winner. Unless the William Buick trained runner isn’t feeling it, Modern pulls way from his competition. 

• Top Overlay – Kimari – Breeders’ Cup Sprint

The Wesley Ward 5-year-old mare has won 2 straight. Yes, she must beat the boys in this, but she’s run faster in recent races than her competition. Also, Ward is used to saddling mares to win over their male competitors. 4-to-1 odds are too high on the BC Sprint’s most logical winner.  

• Second Best Overlay – Cyberknife – Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

Brad Cox’s best 3-year-old has developed into a gifted runner. Cyberknife is a fighter. He can lead or stalk and has battled classy opponents like Epicenter, Zandon, Taiba, and Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike. We can’t say that about the top three choices in this race: Cody’s Wish, Gunite, and Laurel River.  

• Biggest Underlay – Jackie’s Warrior – Breeders’ Cup Sprint

Jackie is a tough play at 4-to-5 odds. The Asmussen trainee finished second in the his last race and hasn’t faced competition this steep since finishing sixth at the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Kimari is in much better form. 

• Second Biggest Underlay – Rebel’s Romance – Breeders’ Cup Turf 

The Charles Appleby trained runner can win the turf. But Romance is at 3-to-1 on the morning line, which are underlay odds. Nations Pride is at 7-to-2, Mishriff is at a healthy 6-to-1, and War Like Goddess is at 9-to-2. All three of those runners can beat Rebel’s Romance.
